not your typical brown applicant

I posted on here awhile back, but I just want to know my chances at Brown, my dream school—they look much more at personality and potential than most other top schools

i go to a very competitive public school in the northeast that sends tons of kids to the ivies every year (maybe 40 out of 400...i know its a lot)..no important legacy to speak of..school does not rank

ACADEMICS
First 3 years- 3.55 academic GPA with a huge upward trend (hoping for 3.65 after first semester senior year)—this is weighted, my school doesn’t weight very much though, so my UW isn’t very different
FRESH- 5.5 academic credits- 3.067 GPA, 2 honors, highest english
SOPH- 5 academic credits- 3.467 GPA, highest english
JR- 7.5 academic credits- 3.977 GPA, 2 AP, advanced english
SR-signed up for 6 academic credits including 4 APs, advanced english
If French is taken out of the GPA picture, it jumps by about .2 to a 3.75 academic after 3 years.

ACT Composite- 33 (hoping for 34 on retake)
SAT Reasoning Test- 2200 (750 M, 740 CR, 710 W) (hoping for 750 M, 780 CR, 770 W on retake)
SAT II's- Math IIC- 750, US History- 700, going to take one more in the fall

AP Courses taken
JR- AP Gov--realistic 5 on test
AP Econ--realistic 5 on micro and 4/5 on macro test
SR- signed up for AP Calc AB, AP English Lit, AP Physics C, AP Stat

National Merit Commended Scholar—will not be a semifinalist

Basically, my GPA is so low because I don’t really try in school. It’s kind of a problem that I’ve been working on (as shown by the upward trend), it’s just I developed bad study habits in middle school for a variety of reasons after being a ‘wonderkid’ when I was younger.

I've taken 4 French courses, 4 science courses (1 AP, 1 honors), 5 math courses (2 APs, 1 honors), 4.5 SS courses (2 AP), 7.5 English courses (1 AP, others highest possible)

Thats about it....its pretty thorough i think...if i left anything out please let me know

So, do you guys think I can get into Brown? Any tips to help me on my journey?

Also, what are your thoughts on the following schools for me, or any others that you can come up with?
UVA, Duke, William and Mary, Macalester, Northwestern, Pomona, Hamilton, Wesleyan, Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, Georgetown,

As you can see, I'm all over the place.

Thanks for reading this!

i had a 3.63 and a 2270, great recs/extracurriculars and the like....got deferred early and then rejected. part of it was that i did my app in basically one day and it came out terrible. mainly, though, my grades were just too low. i ended up at middlebury.

i also had a legacy. since you have slightly worse stuff than me and lack the legacy, i'd say you're a defer/reject, too. you certainly have a chance, though. i can identify with your upward trend, laziness in school, and former wonderkid status. good luck.

yea...thats what i figured
i know one thing that will help though is that i'm definitely going to apply early decision, i forgot to mention that before

also forgot to mention that I've been a part of the Radio Station at my school, and have a show

your ec are that spectacular

You are actually a very typical Brown applicant. Good luck!

BrownPlease, do you think if I spend a ton of time on the app that I'd have a legitimate shot? Basically, when you say you rushed your app, does that mean you didn't spend a lot of time on your essays, etc?

well i thnk you have a decent shot (great ECs and stuff and of curse academics) but i think the fact that your not interested in school or whatever may be a big problem, esp if your gonna go to brown. i think you should start getting more focused because from what i've heard, college is TOUGH and you really need to be into it and get good study habits. that, i think is the number one thing yuou need to fix.

otherwise, as far as chances go, i think youve got a good shot, but then again as BrownPlease said, you never know you might get rejected.
GL :)

"...it’s just I developed bad study habits in middle school for a variety of reasons after being a ‘wonderkid’ when I was younger."

Sorry for sounding rude, but isn't that just a fancy cop-out for becoming a burn-out?

That being said, however, I think you have a decent shot at Brown, given your extracurricular resume and upward trend for your GPA. (Please keep in mind that I'm no expert on college admissions, just another rising senior who's pondering his own chances.)

Keep chugging along, and I wish you the best of luck!

Ehhhh, I don't know if I'd say that I burned out as much as that I just never really developed any outside of school study habits...I cruised through elementary school studying things that no one else understood (Einstein, etc.) because I liked it, and not really caring about what we were learning, since it was so easy. Then, in middle school, my older brother, who was in high school, was a big distraction to me for a lot of reasons I don't really want to get into...anyway I'm not going to tell Brown this, so it doesn't really matter.

Also, I don't really know how legacy works at Brown, but my first cousin is currently their, and her dad, my uncle, is a member of the faculty. Will this make any significant difference?

I also heard that Brown's pretty big on music. Do you think it would make sense for me to really play up my jazz piano abilities on my application? Also, does anyone know of any supplementary essays Brown uses?
