Not your usual chinaman... (except for the eyes o/c :D)

Anyway, since I'm going to get screwed over by AA anyway, might as well see how low I need to aim.... I'm a junior now, but I'm pretty certain how my final app. is going to look like, especially since I've finished testing.

Cleanly trimmed 12 large oak trees on the church grounds of my church, laid down 16 cubic yards of mulch (A ton of it...), cleared yards of overgrown brush, and planted flowers. Total volunteer hours from other workers recorded: 145 hours. Total funding: $1100.

Weightlifting Team 10,11,12... (On varsity...) (Around 10 hours a week)
-No awards, haha... there's only one award for weightlifting. State champion, or second/third place. Unfortunately, not quite good enough for that... sigh. But at least I made varsity.

Minor ones:
Mu Alpha Theta: 9,10,11,12... didn't win anything, just participated cause I'm too retarded.... sigh...
Church Youth Group: Every Wed.: Good times, not much importance though. But hey, it fills space.
NHS: 11,12. I hate this SO much. Most useless club ever.

Employment:

A retirement home: I work as a food server to the old ladies (I love them!...). 11 hours a week average, all year round. Started beginning of Junior Year (Just turned 16)

Community Service: (Here's where I do good, for once! 580 total hours)

4 Mission Trips for Katrina Disaster Relief... (250 hours)
Conjunction with Biloxi Presbyterian, Lagniappe Presbyterian, and HFH... went with my church. Around 250 hours total work, not counting sleeping and eating, haha.

Boy Scouts... (~120 hours)
Includes my eagle project, and all the service I did while in it.

BINGO Caller... (~140 hours)
At the Retirement home where I work. Every Thursday night, a lot of Tuesday nights... 2 hours per night. The old ladies love me!~

Church Renovation Project: (~70 hours)
I was one of the workers that helped renovate my Church's barn... pretty much demolished half of it and made it bigger. Took like 2 weeks, I pretty much came out looking like a straight Mexican instead of an Asian... but it was so much fun.

So, how do I stack up the million and one other asians with perfect SATs... at least I don't play tennis. Anyway, I'm looking at these schools:

University of Florida (Probably where I'll be stuck in, hope to God I make it in honors college...)

Furman University: Might get a free ride, through a program at where my dad works (Embry-Riddle)

Davidson College: My TOP TOP choice, I would die if I could get in here with a good scholarship... love their honor code, everything about it.

Grinnell College: ...Not bad, good acceptance rate. Maybe get a scholarship?

Cornell:

Columbia: What can I say.. I'm a dreamer.

are you fishing for compliments?? well here it is … you are an excellent student. beyond excellent. you will get into all these places with good money. your toughest obstacle will be the choice you must make.

No way, lol… actually this place depresses me. Every single thread is full of state/national award winners, perfect SATs, like 15 AP courses…

I’m just a normal guy trying to get through, haha… just look at my depressingly short list of ECs.

half page != depressingly short dude

Dude I don’t have ONE SINGLE position in a club… well probably because I hate the whole nature of joining clubs and getting positions to pad up my application so much that I avoided them, but that’s a moot point…

You are either someone who really needs compliments and/or attention or you are extremely ignorant.

Probably both.

Either way, you’ll get into every school on that list save for (possibly) Cornell and Columbia. But you have a shot at these places as well.

It’s much easier to improve your overall score when you are just lacking in one section; plus, to me at least, that score looks like an anomaly.

Also, I would apply to more reach schools.

Never mentioned I was a bad student I know I’m not that…
Just too many good ones. So what are my chances at a place like cornell/anywhere one tier below HYPSM?

With that attitude, about “■■■” about your race, family etc…

And being so cocky and all…

I do hope that you’ll change your attitude.

I doubt the more competitive colleges would want someone with this sort of attitude.

In everywhere besides Cornell and Columbia. They’re reaches.

Your scores are good, but to be honest your ECs aren’t that impressive… seems like you’re just padding your posting with courses. :P

You have a strong shot at Davidson I think, and Grinnel. I won’t guarentee you anything, but you are a strong candidate like many others. Cornell and Columbia are reaches, as they are for most people.

Although explain this to me. IB is a two year program, although some highschools make it into 3 years with Pre IB. How come your school has a 4 year IB schedule? Also, the IB organization says you can only test in 4 IB subjects, just an FYI. And there is no calc HL, there is an advanced mathamatical topics HL which is beyond calculus, I don’t even know what it covers.

I’m pretty sure freshman year courses were Pre-IB … our school simply switches things around between those 2 years; for example bio freshman and chem sophmore, inq.skills freshman and world history sophomore… I know geometry was weighted 4.5 so I assumed pre-ib also…

And for the posters making absurd judgements on my character- learn to lighten up, and realize that your ‘holier than thou’ attitude isn’t helping. I’m 17…we say ■■■ and have a flippant attitude toward academics at times. And I admitted too many times that I don’t feel on the same standard as many posters on these forums, but also realize I’m a decent student.

Haha, dude, no offence intended. =)

I’m 17. I say ■■■. But not about my race or my family’s background dude. And “screwed over by AA” isn’t the most sensible phrase to approach others in this community with. People could get offended. Your family’s income isn’t low-tier, far from it. There are others who have much lower familial income than you.

Sorry if I sounded rude before, and to be honest, you’ve got quite a bit going there. Try your best, and like those before said, try your luck at more reaches as well.

Haha, I said ■■■ about my families income because in terms of college scholarships/acceptance, it’s a deathtrap… I realize it’s around upper middle class in Florida.

A) It’s in the range where colleges THINK our family can pay for most of the tuition…
B) Except my dad keeps building $150,000 house ‘expansion’ projects (2 in the last year and a half, actually)… and telling me I need to get scholarships or else we will never be able to pay for college.

Not a fun situation.

Try getting by on $20k/yr and then say how terrible having a high income is.

And I’m thankful I’m not getting by on 20,000 a year. But this is strictly talking about the COLLEGE ADMISSIONS process here.

So please just chance me and I’ll chance you back, if you want me too  I can’t edit my posts now… and I’m not dead serious on everything I say, so I’m sorry if you take it that way. lol.

you’re probably in at every college you listed except cornell and columbia. great shot at both of them nonetheless. one thing that bothers me tho…don’t call yourself a chinaman, even as a joke, that’s just really disrespectful to chinese ppl in general…

Oh… well, I never knew really considered it a derogatory or racist term… too late for me to edit anything now, though. Chinaman = man who comes from China. Just sounded more interesting than asian, haha…

Should I apply to more top-tier schools? Kind of worried about burning hundreds of dollars of money and writing tons of supplementary essays, though… what do you guys think?

mowmow721, here’s more advice from a 52 year old. please do not give out any more personal information regarding income, lifestyles and your heritage for that matter.

In fact, if you can go back and edit your posts and take out any personal info except your school desires and stats. This is all information nobody has any business knowing
