Note-taking frequency questions

I just have a few questions about notes in college.

How many classes are you taking?

In how many of those classes do you take notes?

About how often do you do so?

I’m looking at getting something like the Livescribe Pulse pen in lieu of taking my laptop to class, but want to know if it’s worth it. Thanks!

the only classes I took in college where I didn’t take notes were:

adventure games
wind symphony

generally you take notes every class… for the whole time.

That’s what I would have thought but most of my friends said “one or two.” But that’s why I asked here. More responses.

it depends on the style of your class, honestly. all of mine are seminars with final papers rather than final exams. there are days when i don’t take any notes at all because the topic of that particular class isn’t going to apply to my final paper and i don’t find it interesting or useful otherwise. i take notes probably in 2/4 of my classes every class. the other two i take notes once a week, maybe?

I’m taking five classes. (Philosophy, Religion, Psychology, Spanish, and Mediated Communications)

I take notes in pretty much all of them. In philosphy we get powerpoints so I take minimal notes on those, but definitely not as many notes as I would if I didn’t have the powerpoints, in religion I take notes pretty much all class long because the professor likes to talk at us. In communications I take notes basically all class, every class, because every class is a lecture and tests are lecture based. I take minimal notes in Spanish, usually only if we’re talking about a new grammar topic. Psychology is basically completely lecture/powerpoint. I print off the powerpoints before class and take minimal notes on the powerpoints. If I didn’t have the powerpoints, I would be taking notes like all class long every class.

Last semester…same thing. Took notes in every class, all class long.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like I won’t be wasting my money if I buy the pen.

hold up. it depends on what kind of school your going to. im in a business school and in most of my classes i’ve relied on slides. i just listen in lectures and dont take notes down unless its to mark down that slide for an exam or something of that sort. in my liberal arts classes its a a bit different. some of them require a lot of note taking, in which case i use my laptop if its allowed. but in other classes, you just need to listen and then write papers.

I’m going to be a business major. I don’t know what emphasis or anything yet but definitely business.

that changes things a lot then. you’ll probably be getting a lot of slides in your classes so the notes will be there already. you can print them or view them on your computer. it doesn’t really matter what major either in business. sometimes i forget to carry a pen around to classes b/c most of my notes are on my laptop. it’s something to keep in mind.

I’ll think about all that. Thanks for the input!

Im a math major. Im currently taking:

Real Analysis
Abstract Algebra
Axiomatic Set Theory
Fundamentals of Computer Systems
Physics I with Calculus. (this class is a joke…)

I dont take notes in any class. I have found that reading the book before every class and then paying full attention to the lecture actually makes you understand more.

For tests I just use the book to study. It works.

I’m taking Biology II, Writing About Literature, Tech & Society, Statistics, Chemistry II.

I take notes in all of them, though for Bio II and Chem II I use my laptop for notes, since the profs talk wayy too fast for me to handwrite it all.
