I will be a freshman this fall and was wondering if you are allowed to / if students do use their laptops to take notes during large lecture classes. Or do people just use a pencil & notebook? I already bought a laptop so I am more just curious as to how most people take notes during class. I am considering buying one of those tape recording pens that records your writing and any audio during class. Is it worth it? Thanks.

In most classes you are allowed to take notes in class on a laptop, but in a few of them the professor will make a rule against it because they realize that most students on a laptop are probably not paying attention. Also, depending on the class, you may want to take notes in a notebook (particularly for math classes). I took notes on my laptop for many classes because you are able to go back and easily add things without having to worry about space on a page.

You’re allowed to bring a laptop, as long as you’re willing to lug it around with you everywhere. Also, if you have a huge laptop and your class is in a tight lecture hall, make sure you sit in a less crowded area since some people may get annoyed.

A tape recorder is a great idea. My psychology professor was the only person who didn’t want anybody recording her lectures, and she made a clear explanation of it.

I personally prefer pen and paper. I type really passively, so if I’m actively writing things down, it’ll retain more.

A few of my professors didn’t allow laptops but most did. 99% its a huge worthless distraction, I’d say you’ll almost always be better off with a pad and paper but I rarely took notes in lecture. I preferred to read the book and perk up if he was talk about a topic I thought was confusing. Tape recording pen sounds pretty unhelpful as everything you need to know is in the book but if it works for some people good for them
