Note-taking

Hello all!

So I started Uni last week, and thus far I love it!

But here is my concern... As I look around, I see everyone taking notes from the Power Point(s) that the Professors have. However, when I take notes, I have a problem grasping and comprehending what the Professors are saying. I just write down what they say, but it never fully gets grasped in my head. By the end of the day, if I look at my notes, I learn, but if I don't review them, I often-times FORGET what they even lectured about!

And, we have Blackboard and so I usually just print out the Power Points and look over them while the Professor(s) are speaking.

I guess my questions is; is this an okay way to learn? Like, I just print out the Power Points instead of taking notes, and then I just pay attention while the Professors are speaking. I seem to learn better, but it feels a bit awkward not taking notes. I mean, it doesn't bother me too much, because everyone else just copies the slide-shows. But I want to make sure that I am learning in the best way possible.

Also, all of my Professors(even my Freshman Comp Professor) do not grade homework, or anything of that nature. They just either give out quizzes or tests. I don't even have to write essays in my classes. Is this normal, or will I probably be graded for homework and given writing assignments later on?(Sophomore, etc.)

I know these questions may sound weird, and rather vague, but I want to make sure that I am learning in the most efficient and correct way. I don't want to adopt some routine that could be detrimental to learning!

Yeah that sounds fine as far as notes go, but I’m guessing that you’ll have to take professors that write on the board, so be expected to take notes then. And most of my classes didn’t have required homework. It’s not uncommon.

It will probably take some practice (paying attention to the professor while taking notes, and learning). You kind-of answered your own question - you often-times forget what the lecture was about. For some college courses, you might have an exam/quiz on the lecture… so if it wasn’t on the power point for whatever reason (and it wasn’t covered in the textbook reading), you would be screwed! Maybe you could try jotting down lecture notes on the sides of the power point print-outs; I know you can print power point notes out with a margin for notes on the side. Keep trying to find what works for you!

I’ve heard there are professors who will assign homework, but you will never receive a grade for any of the work. They’re assigned to help you study and prep for the exams. That’s part of the reason why it’s harder to get a good grade compared to High School. You don’t have the homework assignments to balance out your grades; many college course grades will be based on ONLY exams or papers you write. So it’s perfectly normal! But keep doing the homework assignments, for yourself! =]

Good luck~!
