notebook for math major

Hi.

I'm gonna be a math major and I've been looking for a laptop b/c the one I have right now died, so it's about time.

Do math majors need to carry their laptops around to class? I am under the impression that that would be inconvenient (unless you had a tablet pc) because it's hard to type math equations.

Should I go for a heavier laptop with better performance or sacrifice some performance for mobility?

DO you usually use good ol' paper and pencil for math classes?

THanks

I’ve never seen a student in any of my math classes use a laptop. Writing out all kinds of notations and symbols, drawing figures… paper is far easier than typing. I actually got a chuckle just thinking about how slow that would be. I can’t think of any major where you -need- a computer for lectures. My undergrad was computer science, and 3/4 of the students (myself included) used pen and paper exclusively in class.

I do know a couple of people who take math notes on a laptop, but most don’t and I agree that it’s pretty inconvenient. That being said, chances are that more than half of your classes will be non-math classes. If you would like to take notes on a laptop in humanities or social science classes, the extra mobility might be worth the investment.

So it is theoretically possible to survive through college as a math major without a notebook but with a desktop?

I would not recommend a desktop because you cannot travel with it. I really appreciate having access to all of my files when I am not at school (breaks, some weekends, etc). But on days that I sleep in the dorm, my laptop usually never leaves my room.

yes.

people have been doing that for years.

okay thanks

I have both and I prefer my desktop. I’m happy I have the laptop because it has come in handy before, but I prefer my desktop.
