Is it necessary to have one? If so, where can we loop it to?

If you choose to, you can loop it around the the pole of the bed. It should be simple.

Nothing is ever required by UCLA. Your equipment can always be stolen. The lock is just a safeguard in your mind. Anyone with the intention of stealing your stuff will cut the lock easily, even for the claimed "powerful and unbreakable locks".

not necessary, but i have one. you can loop it onto your bed or your shelf. to me its just comforting knowing that someone cant walk in and literally just grab my laptop and walk out.

Have one but never used it. But Boelter's right...anyone with the intention of stealing will easily bypass the lock, haha.

true, but how many people do you know that carry around bolt cutters or axes?

Perfect solution is just to lock the doors if you're not there! I mean, it's not like you'll be locking it anyways when you're on campus --- which is probably where it's more vulnerable to theft.

Hide it in your underwear where no one will check! 100% foolproof.

What's wrong with carrying an ax around?

To Castel: Hide it in your DIRTY underwear, and no one would WANT to steal it. Hahaha. Has anyone had their laptop stolen despite having a security cable?

I have some friends who had their laptop stolen, but that's because they left it in the lounge unattended.

And I don't know anyone who carries a lock with them around campus.

A simple pocketknife (right kind) can cut it open.

True, but there's many cases when you leave, the roomate opens the door to promote a "social room", and there's trouble. Or when you bolt the door to go to the bathroom, your roomate leaves ...

I'd worry if you have enough room in your underwear to hide a laptop.

Anyways, does anyone know if the res halls have that lockable drawer like the building (Rieber Terrace, I think?) I stayed in for orientation? And is it large enough to stick a laptop in? Couldn't that be a viable alternative to a laptop lock?

Haha I meant underwear drawer ;).

Can't we just buy a safe or whatnot to put the laptop in?

dang people. way overboard.

this is just to keep honest people honest and prevent someone from just picking it up and walking off with it. its not like theres a gang of pro laptop thieves going around and stealing laptops.

locking it in a drawer or something is viable if you're leaving for the weekend or something but not very practical if you're using it every day.

i highly doubt you will be able to cut the cable with a pocket knife, no matter how sharp. but in the end...its just a theft DETERRENT, people. not a theft prevention device (btw, theres no such thing...theres always a way around something). think of it as locking your car. would your car get stolen if you leave it unlocked? pretty unlikely, but it makes it that much easier should the wrong person come across it. will locking it prevent your car from being stolen? obviously not. thieves who know what they're doing and know what they want will get it no matter what. same thing applies here.
