Notebooks. Do people use them?

Approximately what % of students bring laptops to lectures/classes, specifically engineering classes (EU major)?

i'm also curious but about L&S classes

L&S...honestly not a lot...ppl r usually too busy sleeping...and those that actually do bring laptops don't really use it for note taking purposes lol...so if your prof is not a psycho that changes slides every 5 seconds notebooks are actually more helpful n less of a distraction...besides itz a pain to carry the laptop around...but i might be wrong about some classes

I bring my laptop only to non-science classes, since these are the classes where the professor tends to lecture on stuff that don't require frequent drawing of diagrams or writing equations and formulas.

Not that many students bring laptops. I guess most people don't want to risk losing them or accidentally damaging them or something. I got a great price for my computer though, so...muahaha.

Some do. Most, probably.

i'm in engineering and so far i'd say you don't really need it that often for in class (except for maybe a computer science class). usually if you're doing math/physics/chemistry you're not going to want to be using a computer.

Oh, I didn't think primarily "EU" classes. My mistake. I would imagine you'd want a notebook in chem, math, physics, ect. You could always bring a small one that can fit in your pocket as a back-up. You'll see what works for you.

About 15-25% of the people in my poli sci classes have them. Noone brings em for classes where you need to draw stuff (science, math, you get the idea).

Almost all of the people I see that have them are decent at taking notes for the first half of the class but then they tend to get distracted and start playing poker or surfing the internet or chatting.

It takes a lot of discipline to take notes.

Personally, I prefer to take advantage of black lightning (paid notes) when I can because lectures are basically just long, boring recitals in general.

I'm getting myself a voice recorder with lots of disk space. Best idea I've had ever!

But then you have to listen to them anyways :P

Personally, I don't think lectures are all that useful. I've gotten all A's (no A minuses) for those classes with black lightning notes.

You can read and absorb whats said in a 1.5 hour lecture (4-5 pages) in under 30 minutes easily (as long as there no formulas). In addition, you can also reread parts you don't get the first time and are sure to get exactly what was said down.

I'm not sure why lectures are really necessary but thats just my opinion. I think they should just cancel lecture and have tons more discussion.

I bring notebook computer to poli sci and history classes (and sometimes rhetoric). Makes reviewing for the next easier and I type faster than I write.

Tons of people bring'em to class and it bugs the bejesus out of me. Some people take notes, but more often they check email, myspace, facebook, or play music. I've even seen people watching movies. I just don't see why you'd even come to class if you're not going to pay attention.
