Nother friends FAFSA question

Like Curmudgeon, I'm helping a friend with FAFSA/school stuff (I work with students for a living, but this is outside work.) This is simpler, and I'd just like some insight from a FA pro, or even semipro :).

This is an older single woman. Independent, no dependents. Lives solely on disability. Gets food stamps, which is indicated on the FAFSA. Has an income of just over 12,000. EFC is about 2400. Can this be right? I really thought that income would be low enough for 0, or near to it, EFC. I've looked over the SAR, and that's definitely the only income. No assets listed (and not asked for I'm assuming because of food stamps.) None to list, anyway.

Does this sound correct? thanks in advance.

Check out this link (that sk8rmom found). About half-way down it talks about food stamp recipients and zero EFC. http://www.ifap.ed.gov/efcformulaguide/attachments/111408EFCFormulaGuide0910.pdf

Income protection for independent students is about 7000, after which 50% goes to increasing EFC.

Thanks, Curm. I had thought that it would be automatic, but your very helpful link includes this:

I’m still puzzled by that efc expected at that income, though.

Thanks, fiona.

Guess she should move to a park bench…
