Hey everyone! I’ve been keeping up with everyone’s updates but only decided to make an account to reply today. I’m assuming nobody has heard about finalist positions yet? I feel confident that my phone interview went well, but I’m still extremely nervous, of course. :)

I haven’t heard…has anyone?

D2 got a letter today inviting her to the Fellows weekend at the University in Feb. It comes with a brochure that gives you the 2 day schedule. Guess we got lucky so far. If we get cut now, maybe we get a fruit basket:) Good luck to you all.

Bikedad

Congrats to Bikedad’s D, and best wishes for all!

fingers crossed!!!

:)

congrats!!!

glad to know it’s coming via mail
but sad at the same time…my mail is notoriously slow

^ keep us posted rocket6 - we’re rooting for you!

bikedad, did your D have a phone interview?

nvm - i found the answer.

Surprised by a few of the responses. Still curious as to the reality of the class size in the honors courses at Alabama. I have a few acquaintances currently at UA in the Honors College & are University Fellows that I can email. Apparently I came to the wrong place to get straight info. about the honors courses & the fellows experience. Once again, almost all the info. in this thread is readily available on Alabama’s website. There is no need to be impolite or overly sensitive as this is an open forum. Thanks!

hey gifford - start a new thread. you are off topic in this thread.

if you have friends to ask … then ASK THEM. most of us here are parents who don’t even have a kid in the school yet.

Thanks Mike. I think that I have “learned” enough about Alabama for now. Best wishes for your student.

Did anyone else hear about finalist status?

Oh, Bikedad, that is such great news! So proud of your girl! When is the weekend, what dates? Hope she has a great time!

Gifford -

If you do have friends at UA encourage them to come to this forum, I would love to see more from actual students.
While I totally appreciate the input from everyone on here (m2k included!) I am also looking for things not on the website. So far UA has been straight as far as what I’ve read vs. what I’ve heard is fact, but I’d have to be a moron to not take it all with a grain of salt as the website is probably their #1 marketing vehicle.
When I was contacted by our local UA rep regarding the AP credit question on another thread - she referred me to the same chart online that we all started with. Again, I appreciated her effort but am not crazy enough to think that when push comes to shove and we get down to the real advising etc. the answer may be different.
Seriously, I think any UA student input would be greatly appreciated by all on here!

Oh yeah - forgot to add - Congrats Bikedad’s D!

Thanks, Guys. Everyone give the mail a day or two. You know how snail mail varies.
The schedule says:

Friday, Feb. 19:

Check in at the Hotel Capstone at 4:00 to 5:30; Reception at the University Club at 6:00; Dinner at Smith Hall at 7:00.

Sat. Feb 20:

Breakfast with Honors College at 8:00; Interviews and visits to areas of interest from 9:00 to 12:00; Campus tour (parents) 10:30; Lunch at 12:00; then Interviews again from 1:00 to 5:00

It also says “parents are welcome to make individual plans for Friday and Sat.” Translated: we’ll be drinking coffee in the lobby. lol Make that margaritas.

This is just so you guys will know the schedule before you get your letters:) Good luck to you all. I really enjoy this site and the helpful support and info we’ve found here. Thanks again.

BTW D2 says she’s going to look for a roommate at this gig. She’s a non-smoker, quiet, very level-minded kid, who still likes to have a little fun but serious with her studies. I think there will be more than a few of those at this event!

Bikedad

Whoops, I forgot to tell you that they are providing accommodations at the Hotel Capstone. (For just students? Probably? It doesn’t say.) Mom2 where are you?

Transportation will be provided on Friday evening. Lunch on Sat is for everyone. I guess that means parents too. And parents and students get the walking tour together on Sat.

It tells you a bit about attire, though speak with Mom2 to fine tune. Hope this helps.

Bikedad

Yes.

Capstone accomodations are provided for students only.

Aren’t they reimbursing for travel anymore? Does it mention anything. That may have gotten to be too expensive, but I hope they still do that.

I don’t know if the lunch includes parents. How is it worded?

Glad to see that they’ve coordinated the days so that they work better with CBH. CBH’s days are Sun Feb 21 to Mon Feb 22.

As for attire…based on CBH experience…

For interview: Suits for boys or pants, shirt, tie. Career dresses for girls or skirts, jackets, blouse.

For luncheons, welcome reception, etc: this varies…some kids dress up in business attire, some wear corporate casual, some girls wear casual chic.

Can you believe this thread is already 16 pages!!!

16pp?

^no surprise - we’ve got the best and the brightest on here!

Sorry, Guys (and Mom). I was not very specific on some of my points.

As for the meals it says "Dinner on Friday and breakfast on Sat. will be provided FOR STUDENTS. Lunch on Sat will be provided for EVERYONE. (My caps.) They don’t say where, or if parents and students will actually be together. They also say: “(Please notify us of any special dietary needs.)”

Also, the Sat. tour might not be parents and students together because it just says “Both parents and students will be walking across campus on Sat so please plan accordingly (comfortable shoes, umbrella, raincoat, winter coat, etc.)”

Oh, and Mom2, I just noticed it says business casual for Friday evening and BUSINESS FORMAL for Sat.

D2 is going to scam me for a couple of outfits here, but, of course, these students will get plenty of opportunities to wear these business clothes.

They, of course, offer the phone and e-mail if you have questions.

I was wondering if the students room together and the parents find their own accommodations or what? Mom?

Bikedad

Thanks for all the information. We live in Texas so are hoping for mail today or tomorrow if things go well.

Bikedad, thanks so much for the dates. We have a big family wedding the first weekend in March, and I am thrilled that UFE and CBH will not be that weekend.

Again, we are so proud of your girl. Even if kids don’t make the final cut, this is a great opportunity for them to meet their peers and see the campus up close.

Good luck to all! We know you’ll all do great!
