Notification?

Just completed my application and, of course, I'm anxious to find out if I got in. I'm out of state (CT) and I'm applying Undecided. FYI, my SAT was a superscored 1310 (CR 600 M 710) with a weighted GPA of 3.95. Any idea when they should start letting people know?

Did you apply Early Decision or Early Action? If you applied binding Early Decision you will hear by 12/15. If you applied Early Action you will hear by 2/1. With your stats I think you are in. In fact, you qualify for an automatic merit scholarship of $7,000 per year. If you can raise your SAT to 1330+ you can increase the award to $10,000 per year. You can also try the ACT. Miami will allow you to update your scores or GPA until March 1 (even after you have been admitted) to increase your awards.

Thanks for the information. I’m applying Early Action.

Unless they have changed their policy on Early Action you will truly be waiting until 12:01AM on February 1st to see on line if you are in. It adds to the excitement, but many schools post your acceptance on line on a rolling basis as early as November, December.
Many parents last year complained (posted on college confidential) that having to wait so long gave their kids alot of time to get excited over an earlier acceptance elsewhere.

Did you fill out the Honors application? If you did, you will find out from the Honors program just before Christmas. A nice plus.

My son’s applying to a huge batch of EA/Rolling schools. I’m afraid to to him of his first acceptances…he’ll be like “Ok, good enough…going to college, no need to keep checking the other statuses.” With the Feb 1 date, it’ll be one of the last schools he hears from, he’ll be wearing a competitor’s hoodie by then.

Very true - Especially if you as the parent have Miami as your first choice and your son is thinking differently from the get go. This was the case with us - although it ended up on his list of top five to really weigh and consider in the end he ended up at an East Coast School.

At our info session, the Admissions counselor told us Miami does not superscore either the ACT or SAT…said it was because they only receive the composite, not the component scores, which I thought sounded odd…but that’s what she said.

Miami University Oxford

ACT/SAT Scores
These scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. You can request submission of these scores to Miami by contacting ACT or the College Board (SAT). Miami’s ACT code is 3294; the SAT code is 1463. This requirement includes the ACT/SAT writing exam. (For admission and review purposes, no preference is given for ACT or SAT; Miami uses the highest test score submitted. For ACT, the best composite score is used; for SAT, the best Critical Reading and Math sub-scores are used.)

He’ll be wearing a hoodie from another university

I was one of the parent’s who expressed some frustration in January. However, my S eventually decided upon Miami and he is thriving there. A bitter cold day when visiting Madison combined with a very nice reception for admitted students sponsored by the Miami parents club sealed the deal. (The reception was something new and might be due to the number of admittees in the Chicago area.)

My wife and I have been extemely pleased with the overall experience as well as the communication from the university parent’s office. The summer orientation and move-in day were well organized - no compliants. But I still think if they could get the EA acceptances out 2 -3 weeks earlier, they might positively impact their yield. I know of two students from S’s class that were vascilating between Miami and IU-Bloomington and wound up going to IU. Did the final decision come down to red brick vs. limestone, MAC vs. Big 10, or was it the timing of acceptance - IU has rolling admissions so that you hear back in about 4 weeks.

I may have a heart attack waiting this long! I think I may have my son apply at more schools! He’s a good candidate, but putting as many eggs in the Miami basket as he has put, so to speak…scary!! The really great publics must be swamped with applications!

Senior year is stressful!

Senior year has been less for my D than other years. She does not have many classes to take for both her major and minor. She even had to take a filler class to make sure that she is full time student She had to make sure her schedule is lighter in senior year because of Medical Schools interviews that she has been going for several weeks, missing lots of classes and exams - had to make up. But she enjoyed her interviews also. By the way pre-med advisory at Miami is superior, her application was done well before some others’ from different schools.

Actually, I was talking about the senior year of HS being stressful. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

^Sorry, misunderstood, I do not remember much about HS senior year, except drivnig to few places for interviews for D’s programs. At least trip to Cinci was not wasted, she ended up at Miami and has worked out very well for her.

Think the Honors College applicants will actually find out this week whether they were accepted?

Ugh, my problem with the 2/1 announcement is that as an OOS from Indiana, my son has direct admit to Kelley School of Business…making my HUSBAND have WAY too much time to think about what all we could do with the 13,000/yr. more we would have in income if he does NOT send our son to Miami. I was the one who heard our very non-emotive son say after his Miami visit, “I really see myself here.” He’s a super kid. I’d love to see him at his “dream school”. I think I’m going to need to haul my husband on over there so he can see for himself why my son is “in love”. Congrats to the ED students. I wish we could have done that…but we’re going to have some financial maneuvering to do…just couldn’t make the commitment…fingers crossed!

I read that they mail “decisions” Dec 22 to anyone who applied in time for the Harrison. Does that mean they just tell you if you got the Harrison, or do they give you your admission and Honors decision? Is there an interview process for the Harrison?

There is no interview for Harrison. Students who submitted their Honors AND admission app by Nov 3 are considered for Harrison. Notifications mailed on Dec 22 and include Harrison decision. If student not selected for Harrison, letter may indicate acceptance to Honors and admission to MU, just admission to MU, or you’ll be told to wait for Feb 1 for admission decision.

Thanks, admin…that helps. The process is a little confusing…but he did apply for Honors, so perhaps he’ll hear.
I know he would love to know something before Christmas.
Half of his gifts are MU clothes :)
