D is OOS and is hoping for a bit of merit scholarship. Any word on the status or possibility of OOS scholarships this year? Friend's son received one two years ago with stats just less than hers, but it seems like requirements have gone up?

sylvan, most of the scholarship announcements here on CC seemed to be in November/December with stats 33+ACT/Top 5%. There was a post that said they were accepted early fall, but just received their $10K scholarship last month. For full tuition at least, it seems like the early bird gets the worm at Pitt.

I’m out of state and received my scholarship like a day I was accepted for $10,000. I received my acceptance letter in late January and my scholarship letter like a week after. I wasn’t top 5% and I didn’t get a 33 ACT. (Never took the ACT’s and I was top 10%)

D is OOS. She applied by Nov. 1 with ACT 31 and weighted GPA 4.4. She got $10k/yr scholarship.

Hmm…this really doesn’t sound good for D despite her 33 ACT superscore :(. I figured her rank would be the death of her somewhere…

When did she apply, sylvan?

^She applied in mid November and was accepted December 15.

I called financial aid on Friday and the staff said to me that I only qualified for a loan. She was patient and nice and told me to call the admissions office for merit information. I have a 31ACT 3.5 GPA. Admissions staff told me that I did not qualify for merit even though I have higher scores. You also have to be top 5 percent of your class. There is no legacies either. The person at admissions office was very rude and not helpful to me. She repeated the same line about applying on time and getting things in. Everything was in on October 29th. We had Sandy and our term was pushed off by two days. so my mid year grades went On 7th Jan. Looks like you have to be #1 in your class or low income/poor for Money. If you have parents who work and take care of you then forget it. I am so frustrated and have given up on Pitt. It seems unfair how they do things. Good luck to you.

Technically speaking, your stats aren’t even UHC level stats. You have to have a minimum 32 composite ACT for UHC plus top 5% of the class. Plus the average GPA of a student applying to Pitt last year was 3.93. Your GPA is much lower than that, unfortunately.

I understand but I was not looking to be in UHC. Does this mean merit is only for UHC students? I am a bit confused with the terminology. Should I refer to academic scholarship?

^I think they give out very little in merit scholarships, really, compared to some of the other schools. I’m not sure what is “unfair” about that, since it’s their money. They get to make the rules about whom to give it to.

Pitt still seems to be one of D’s top choices, although personally I would prefer to see her choose one of the schools that offered a scholarship and at least the possibility of getting into the Honors College.

Well it seems that most of the money tends to go to UHC students since they are supposed to be the top students entering Pitt. And there isn’t even enough money for all of them, so if they all don’t get money how is anyone else supposed to?

It also varies school-to-school and department-to-department. SSOE has a HUGE alumni base that pump up their scholarship revenue and allow them to give out way more money to freshman than, say, the English department.

If your D is not in the UHC nothing is stopping her from joining you know. She can ask for permission to apply into UHC housing her freshman year and get permission to take any UHC class she wants to. Also all the UHC events, clubs, and activities are open to ANY student on campus.

What percent of students attempting to get permission to take an honors course actually get in? i.e. are most of the courses filled with the “automatic admits” and there isn’t, in reality, room for those who are not? Who would I ask about this?

I received a $10000 scholarship with 3.6 gpa 50/200 rank and 28 act

Pittbound, are you in-state or out-of-state?

Got an out of state full tuition scholarship from Pitt with a 31 ACT/top 10%.

If you ask permission, you will get it (therefore the answer is 100%). For most (if not all) UHC classes, there is no cap of students-- if many students enroll they will find a space big enough to fit them. However, the nature of UHC courses tends to keep class sizes small (for instance, my UHC Chem 1 class was about 120 students. My UHC Chem 2 class was 49).

As for whom to ask: Just email one of the UHC Advisors. Their emails should be up on the website.

Tfasjr12 & helimomter- congratulations. I am not sure what criteria they use to determine scholarships. All I knows is that they think admitting me should be enough. I have other options so I am okay with not going to Pitt. After all I want to come out with a smaller debt and a good education and I can get that in state.

I’m oos as well and recently recieved my financial aid loan information, i was also hoping for some merit money, and this was not included in the financial aid letter. Does this mean no merit?

my gpa is 3.8
