Notifying Colleges of Bad Grades

Do you need to notify colleges you've applied to about D-grades and course changes for the senior year EVEN IF you know you will not get accepted?

For ex., I applied to UCLA but I now know I won't get in. Do I still need to notify them of the changes although I'll get rejected anyway?

I'm mainly worried about them finding out I "cheated" by not telling them about the D and then blocking me out of the whole UC system including UC's I might get into. But I thought they only check senior grades after admittance?

I want to avoid notifying them if possible as writing it tends to disrupt my comfortable state of denial.

I don’t think you have to tell them your current grades are low, unless they request a mid year report. Also, you are really only “cheating” if you originally said that your current grades are high (on your app or in a midyear report), when you know that they are not. If you are accepted and you finish your senior year with bad grades, they may take back your acceptance after receiving your final transcripts.

Don’t worry about notifying them now! If you do get accepted, write an email stating what happened and give them the opportunity to see your grades. I assume your school will send a final transcript regardless, so let them decide what to do [recind/etc]. For now, I would just sit tight and wait for the decision. :)

At this point with decisions out or about to come out, there’s little point in notifying any of the UCs before you get the admit decision. As part of your admit letter they will tell you that you need to notify them promptly if you drop any of the classes you listed on your app, or if you get any grade below a C.

You could not bother telling them at even that point about the D; they’ll find out when they get your final transcripts anyway. But its in your best interests to tell them as soon as you find out you’re admitted. At that time there is more flexibility in working it out; they may tell you to take a summer class or a class at a CC. But if you wait until August when they’re going over final transcripts those options will be gone and you’re either still in or rescinded.
