S received a call today for an interview with the local Notre Dame Club for potential scholarship awards. Does anyone have any experience with this process that can offer advice on how to prepare.

Just be yourself; don’t try to present some facade of what you think they will like to hear. They would rather hear about individuality that see another cookie cutter candidate. Talk about some things you are passionate about, and talk about your family. One thing though, make it clear that ND is your only choice, regardless of the money. Tell them you will find a way to pay for it or take on debt no matter what. They love to help kids who love ND, so make sure you show that. Above all, don’t be nervous. 95% of the people who will be interviewing you wouldn’t be able to get into the school today.

Exactly what BPKO43 said–they want to meet the candidates and get to know them off paper. Just one addition-tell your son to dress nice. When I arrived for my interview last year, I couldn’t believe that the girl ahead of me was in gym shorts and a t-shirt and the guy after me was in jeans and a polo.

first impression matters a lot like jonoam said.

take a few deep breathes before (this even works for public speaking), and it also helps if you write down some “punch-lines.” i remember when i interviewed for other schools, it was helpful to use some lines that i remembered from my essays.

most of all relax, know that you are already in ND and that the admission committee realized your potential by accepting you.

speaking of your essays…

Be sure to review all the information you gave them on applications/in the essays you wrote. I remember during my interview I was caught a bit off guard because I wasn’t sure what they were referring to at one point. I had written so many essays for so many different scholarships, I couldn’t remember what they knew/didn’t know already or what they were referring to.
