Notre Dame For Engineering?

My son will soon be applying to Notre Dame RD and is definitely going to major in Mechanical Engineering. He will be a competitive candidate in their applicant pool. He loves the campus, the residential college system, the tradition, the alumni network, and many other aspects of the school. His main concern is that Notre Dame's Engineering department is ranked 45th (according to USNWR) when the overall ranking of the school is so much higher. Is this one of their weaker departments?

He wants to get a well-rounded undergrad educational experience, but at the same time wants to know whether ND can prepare him to become a successful Mechanical Engineer versus other higher ranked Engineering schools?

You might try posting this on the engineering board.

MaineLonghorn, I’m not familar with a board discussing majors. Would this be in the “Colleges” section?

FWIW, I have a friend who got an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from ND and then went on to get a Ph.D. in engineering from Princeton. ND engineering dept must be doing something right!

Thanks for your input, momdoc.

Forget rankings. They are essentially meaningless. I am virtually certain that ND provides a very good engineering education.

One attribute to check is how many employers recruit for engineering students (actually - in your case ME) on campus. You can often find this on the campus’ website. It’s not the only attribute to consider but it can be meaningful if there are a lot of employers recruiting.

^^^Good idea. Thanks.

Try posting on the ND forum. Also, you might want to search for poster NotredameAL. His son graduated last year, and I think he was in engineering. You might want to contact him.

I can’t speak to engineering, but S is a sr. this year, and everything else has beeng greatly beyond our highest expectations.

Thanks for your post, sryrstress
