well...i've now heard back from everywhere i've applied. i was waitlisted at my number one choice (columbia) and rejected from my second choice (brown). those were the only schools i really felt passionately about, and now i have to choose between three schools i feel somewhat lukewarm about: northwestern (weinberg), nyu (cas, honors program), and notre dame (honors), all of which gave me full scholarships (though some of nyu's are loans). i am definitely staying on columbia's waitlist no matter what, because i am still absolutely in love with the school and would definitely attend if offered a spot, but i need to choose which school i will attend (barring the ever-so-slight chance of getting off the columbia waitlist).

here's what you should know about me:
-i am currently undecided as to what i would like to study, but i am interested in english/creative writing/screenwriting, film studies, psychology, and law...gosh, maybe even pre-med. (unfortunately?) i have many interests.
-i prefer an urban environment for the abundance of social/cultural/career opportunities it brings.
-i consider myself highly motivated and intellectual, but am laid-back and extremely social. i love to party and socialize, but i am not sure if i have any interest in greek life.
-i am politically liberal.
-sports don't really matter to me (i could go either way).

i'm concerned because i've heard northwestern is full of antisocial geeks/the quarter system is overwhelming, notre dame is incredibly strict and thus not conducive to a very social environment, and it's hard to make friends at nyu/nyu is not very renowned for the particular areas of study in which i'm interested. i feel stuck...i've realized that i don't think any of these schools are a "fit" for me, and i think that's the reason why i'm not too keen to let go of the hope i still have for columbia, the only school i've ever truly wanted to attend. i would give anything to get off of that waitlist.

any suggestions? i would appreciate some advice/commentary/help :)

I've heard different things from students... some say that they're politically liberal and fit in fine at Notre Dame, and that there's so much to do on campus that they don't really want to leave. On the other hand, the consensus seems to be that there's really nothing in South Bend, so if you crave the city, Notre Dame might not be for you. I've also heard that if it's not your "fit" you will have a hard time liking it at Notre Dame. I strongly recommend visiting campus if you haven't already - usually if it's a fit, you'll know it when you visit the campus.

Either way, no matter where you go, if you do well your first year there's always the possibility that a) you'll love it or b) you can transfer to columbia.

Columbia students love being in NYC.
You get NYC with NYU.
Doesn't NYU have a reputable film studies program ? You like an urban, liberal environment- You don't like sports?

LOL, Is this an April Fools Joke ?
What do you like about ND???

one real quick comment, then I've got to run, I might post more in-depth on this later tonight or tomorrow. Northwestern students as anti-social, I really don't thinks so from what my sister (currently there) can tell me about that place. Besides that fact, I've never heard her complain that the quarter system is so overwhelming. Believe me the amount of time it is possible to waste up here each semester is truly astounding if you choose too. I know a kid who spent a minimum of 6 hrs a day playing Final Fantasy X when it came out and this lasted for about a month and he still did fine (and no he wasn't an Arts and Letters major)

One thing is certain. Notre Dame is not for you.

Im fond of Northwestern, but sadly they rejected me. I like it because it's an extremely good school in many areas, not just the liberal stuff (I'm a possible engineer so that kind of thing is important to me). They have a great mix of people (although probably not the real social type as you mention). The campus is pretty decent and Chicago is right there. Evanston isn't so bad either.

The more I think about it though, NYU might be better for you, because they're liberal arts/social sciences only and that seems to be your neck of the woods. They might be better than northwestern in that department because it's their bread and butter. Also, if you like urban, "the city" is as urban as it gets.

Id also like to say that many would kill to be in such a predicament.

I'd say NYU's environment seems to be what you're looking for, and Northwestern comes a close second. Notre Dame would give you a great education, but doesn't seem to be an ideal fit for you. Good luck in your decision, I know how difficult this is...

My friend applied to NYU strictly to do film, so I think they'll have good facilities for what you're interested in. Notre Dame is a nice campus, but they bought up all the land around it so that there wouldn't be businesses distracting their students. Which means no college town. I found that to be a huge turnoff, myself.

thank you all for your opinions--i've come to realize that i probably won't pick notre dame...it's really not a fit for me. maybe a waitlisted kid can take my spot.
