I'm posting this pretty late since admissions came out over a month ago, but I tried looking back through the threads and didn't find much.

Anyways, is anyone else going to the Cultural, Racial, and Scientific Discovery program?

My first choice was Global Issues and second choice was Identity and Social Integration (the Hispanic one), but I think the fact that I hadn't taken the SAT and ACT before I applied kept me from getting in to those (I did decently on both). But yeah, anyways, I'm just happy I got in and I'd like to get an idea of who else is attending this one (most people I've seen post anything about this have gone to the program for Hispanics), and any advice from alumni of this program :)

Hey magictimelord! While I’m not attending your specific seminar, I will be going to Notre Dame’s Leadership Seminar as well!! I’m going to the Global Issues Seminar.

They booked my flight in the past week! I have to arrive a day early if I want to get there on time. I think you should email them and they’ll give you a contact for their travel agent

Emilysayshello, I was wondering the same thing! I haven’t gotten anything from them since I confirmed my spot and I’m dying to get my travel stuff. I think I’ll email them too

I did email them a few weeks ago, as my parents will also be flying in to tour the school( its been quite a dream of mine, to say the least). She said that she’d contact me prior to booking, and since then I haven’t heard anything… So I’m waiting I suppose? My excitement is just taking over though ;D

I am going to the global issues one… I am super super excited!!! How selective was the admission process to get into this seminar?? Does anyone know?

Based on the older threads I’ve read it’s fairly selective. It’s all expenses paid plus they only accept 40 students per seminar so I’d assume so

hey, i’m thinking of applying for 2013 seminar, idealy for the Global Issues? it seems really interesting, but would you guys say it was worth the time? what factors do you think helped you get in?

It most definitely is! 1)It’s basically free 2)If you’re a fan of selective programs then here ya go lol Factors: The program seeks diversity (I’m Jamaican) but majority of the kids there were Americans. As long as your essays and recommendations are good, along with your grades of course, then you should be fine :)

Thanks melaniesnicket! I’ve decided to apply, and have already started looking into the application. I’m American, but I’ve been living outside of the states for the past 4 years (Peru and Uruguay), so maybe that will help…? My standardized test scores aren’t that impressive, but I think I’ll have a pretty good recommendation and I’ve done a lot of different extracurricular stuff (NHS, student council, basketball, volleyball, music honors society, Global Issues Network conference in Peru and Brazil, church group) Do you think I have a good chance?

That should definitely help and the Global Issues EC should make your application look more attractive. I made my essays reflect “social catholic teaching” since they emphasized it in the prompts. Good luck!

I think it is pretty competitive. However, someone also told us that it is also a recruiting tool and therefore students coming from high schools or geographic areas where a large number of kids apply to ND already might be less likely to get into this program (as they may likely apply and have the ability to visit anyway).
