Notre Dame Scholar

My daughter got the good news today that she is admitted! The admissions letter said that she is a Notre Dame Scholar, and said that that means that get some preferential consideration for financial aid. Anyone know what that really means? Tilt award more toward grant than work/study and loans? Or ____? Does ND award flat out merit aid regardless of financial need?
Thanks for any info you have.

No flat merit aid, but you'll get a better financial aid package.

Do you know any details on how the financial aid package is better? No loans or work study and all grant money? Larger total package (that is, Expected Family Contribution is less)? Appreciate any details anyone knows about. Thanks.

I was an ND Scholar last year, and I'm pretty sure that now it means pretty much nothing. Back in the days when the aid was limited, the scholars would receive preferential aid. Now, it it simply an honor...

to whom is it awarded?

I was an ND scholar last year too-it's like the top 10 or 20% of the admitted class or something. Basically, you get like 1000 more in grant money (and 1000 less in loans because of that) than you would if you weren't an ND scholar. Not exactly a big help. Other than that, it really doesn't mean anything.

Yeah, I got ND scholar also and I got exactly $0 in financial aid. If you don't qualify for finaid already, they still won't give you anything. It's not really good for all that much except to make you feel smart I guess...

yeah evidently it doesn't mean much because maggie was one and couldn't even explain kierkegaard to me YOU JERK! Lucky for you, I figured it out on my own and made that theo final my *****!!! whooooooo

haha sorry that reminds me i forgot to write you back.. too bad cuz i own kiekegaard

I got it too. I was excited even if it doesn't help me at all.

I got "Notre Dame Scholar" as well.

So does that really just not mean anything? I'd never even heard of the designation until I got the letter.

It may be too early--but, there is the designation for Reilly Scholar above and beyond ND Scholar. That would be the top group of the ND Scholars. But, that may not come until a little later.

so ND Scholar, Honors Program, and Reilly Scholar are all different?

Yes. However, if you are a Reilly Scholar there's a good chance you'll be invited to apply for the HP. However, I would question the merit of the honors program. In my opinion the program really shouldn't exist and it doesn't really provide anything extra.

and if I recieved a ND Scholar, does that mean I can/cant apply to Honors Program or can/cant be a Reilly Scholar?

ND Scholar means, as was stated above, that your financial aid package leans more towards grant aid and less towards loans and work study.

If I am not mistaken, you will receive a letter regarding the honors program if you qualify. You could be named a Reilly Scholar--it depends on the applicant pool. The very top ND Scholars are named Reilly Scholars unless things have changed.

Is it SAT scores and GPA only that quailfy one for both scholar programs and the honors program and if so what are typically the different levels of scores needed? Thanks.

Hi! My daughter was named Notre Dame Scholar last year (freshman this year) and really it didn't make much difference in what I saw in her financial aid package. I think it is just an honor designation. Exciting though! Congrats to all!

I was invited to attend a Reilly Scholars Weekend! Does that mean that I am one, or that they are considering me as one? Does anyone know what(if any) financial benefits come with being a Reilly Scholar?
