Hi, I was recently accepted EA at Georgetown for government. I really like them, and they are really trying to get me to go there (christmas cards, phone calls...). Still, I applied to ND, because I want to have options. It seems the more I read about it, the more appealing it is. Perhaps the single detriment is its location. Can anyone compare and contrast ND and GU?

From what I read, it seems as though Gtown is better academically. However ND has a better reputation. In addition, IMO the people at Notre Dame are more friendly and not as obsessed with grades.

Basically, ND is better!

I said this before on some other post, I was in a conversation recently where my son, a soph at ND, and his friends were discussing their friends' experiences at other schools, including Georgetown, and they felt their friends at other schools were 1) often not as happy at their school as these kids were at ND, and 2) doing the same thing as ND kids - going to parties, sneaking into bars, etc. They mentioned friends at Georgetown specifically. Yes, the location is technically better, but this only matters if you're out in the world working. If you're a college student, your life revolves around the university events - you're basically in a cocoon.

I went to school in Fort Collins, Colorado. Went up in the mountains like four times total. It was pretty, but after a month or so you forgot to look at the mountains - they just became backdrop. Then we just went to parties and bars, just like everywhere else.

I guess I think location in terms of your experience should be pretty far down on the list of criteria to consider when picking a college. If you want to consider weather, that's another point.

I agree, my idea is that ND and Gtown have student bodies larger than my current community's population :) . Therefore, it is a city unto itself. Anyway I think I will ahve to visit, but first I have to get into ND anyway lol...

i live in south bend and have been in the notre dame community all my life. Certainly, it is not the same city as D.C. (in fact, it's not even a city) but there are some cool places in town. If you are basing your decision on location, then Georgetown is probably better, but academically Notre Dame might be better for you. If you do want to study govt., Georgetown is the place to be, but in other areas Notre Dame rocks.
