Notre Dame vs. Lehigh vs. Northeastern

I'm so lost. Northeastern and Lehigh are about the same (and affordable) and ND is about 15k more. I got into Honors at NEU, Computer Science and Biz program at Lehigh, and I am a Reilly Scholar at ND. I am looking to go into finance, ultimately working on Wall Street or high-tech venture capital in Silicon Valley. I know ND is very highly ranked, but will its location be a detriment? Is it worth it to stay in more of an urban area if it is less prestigious? My family and I are appealing all packages so hopefully aid will increase. I also got into SUNY Bing (sticker price, but significantly less due to in-state residence), SUNY Stony Brook (full ride), UMich (sticker price), Stevens Institute of Technology (full ride), and was waitlisted at Tepper (Carnegie Mellon, sticker price). Can anyone help a brother out?

Would it be a big financial burden to attend ND? If so I would ultimately choose Lehigh. The school is solid for finance and engineering, which coincide with your interests, and is strongly targeted by prominent financial services firms. While NEU is a comparable school academically, it does not have the same exposure to finance.

askjeeves: Could you elaborate on this?

To the OP. financial aid appeals usually result in a few thousand dollars more is successful at all.

I have been in close contact with admissions counselors and financial aid offices at all three schools, and they all seem to want to persuade me as best they can to choose their school. I realize I’m being optimistic, but I think it will come through semi-significantly. As of right now, ND will leave me with about $50k in loans to pay off while the other two will leave me with only about $20-30k, a much more comfortable figure. Could anyone comment on investment banking recruitment from any of these schools, specifically ND? I know it’s ranked at number one, but does it still rank as highly among competitive employers? Also, could anyone elaborate on the social scene of each? I enjoy a quality party (obviously as a backseat to academics).

A LOT of Lehigh grads end up on wall street. That’s about all I know

Northeastern’s business program is better known for accounting than finance, a simple linkedin search will demonstrate as such. Lehigh has a very good alumni network in finance. Simple as that.

Notre Dame is not considered one of the “core” schools for IBD recruiting. However, they are still a semi-target for Bulge Bracket banks and have a very dedicated grads for the practice. The school is very heavily recruited among F500s and Big 4 Accounting.

I suppose the question becomes Notre Dame versus Lehigh. If cost was a nonfactor, which would you say fits my goals more?

Notre Dame. However I don’t think the difference in recruiting is enough to justify the financial burden that your family would carry should you go there. Lehigh is a very good school and you can land the same positions if you put in some more effort to network.

[Lehigh University - Wall Street Council](http://mylehigh.lehigh.edu/s/1127/index.aspx?sid=1127&gid=1&pgid=1730)

icheetah, I agree with you completely. I just wanted to confirm ND’s strength should the financial burden lessen. They are flying me out to visit campus mid-April which is an exciting thing, and I hope aid follows. Since Lehigh and Northeastern are the same price, is if fair to rule out Northeastern?

I personally like the social atmosphere and location of Northeastern more than either Notre Dame or Lehigh. However, if finance employment is a core consideration for you than yes I would keep the contest between Lehigh and ND.

Best of luck and congratulations on getting into very good schools.

Anyone else enrolled/graduated from a program into which I’ve been admitted?

I got into Lehigh’s IBE honors program but I also applied to notre dame. I babysit for a very wealthy private equity guy out here in california and he really wanted me to go to notre dame. He thinks its a great school in general but he also said lehigh would be his next choice. he worked on wall street for over 20 years and said lehigh, especially for finance is a big recruit. He also said goldman sachs recruits from the IBE program which I was excited about. I dont really think you can go wrong honestly. Because of the money id go with lehigh, but if they were the same financially id say notre dame. I’ll most likely be attending lehigh in the fall. We basically want to do the same things career wise. So yeah good luck!

@Leighhopeful I got into the Computer Science and Business program which I’ve heard has a 100% job placement rate. However, I feel as if Notre Dame’s name has a little more pull on the job market. Do you agree? Also, how do you feel about each school’s social scene?

Yeah I agree Notre Dame is definitely more nationally known. If I had been admitted it would definitely have been a hard choice. I think they have similar ish social scenes although notre dame doesnt have greek life. They still party a lot though which is why I think theyre kinda similar but obviously its the greek life thats big at lehigh. It depends if youre into that or not. I personally am and Im that work hard/play hard type so I think I’ll personally have a lot of fun at lehigh. But Ive also heard theres that same mentality at notre dame. After doing a lot of research I think it also depends on where you want to work. If its on wall street both schools probably have similar pulls. If you want to go to the west coast, which is where I want to eventually get back to because I live in california, you might have a little more luck with notre dame. Either way theyre both great schools and let me know which you pick!

I’d cross Lehigh off the list. It doesn’t have the name recognition as the other two schools.

I would go to ND if you can afford it and are okay living in Indiana for four years. Good school albeit in a crappy location. Northeastern is in a fantastic city and will provide the best job opportunities through the co-op program. Might have to come down toa toss up between the two after you visit the campuses. They are very different experiences with ND being a traditional sprawling campus with more conservative catholic values while Northeastern has a more urban and modern campus (skyscrapers) with a more liberal and progressive set of values.
