Notre Dame vs Tulane

So I am down to my final 2 schools, Tulane and Notre Dame. I am going premed, but also want to study business and Spanish (maybe minors or just take classes in both). My parents can pay for undergrad no matter where I go. At Tulane, I got into honors with a 30k per year scholarship. At ND, I got nothing. I LOVED Tulane and I think that I could get involved in a lot of unique things there. I’ve been to ND before and it’s obviously really special plus I have a few friends going there and it’s close to home (I’m from Chicago). Any thoughts?

I am a Tulane grad (many years ago) and absolutely loved it. The size is perfect - not too small or large and academics are excellent. New Orleans is a great city to go to college in, such unique opportunities there. Great network of alumni - I regularly go to alumni association crawfish boils all the way out here in San Diego! My two cents

Tulane . . . . great city (and 4 years away from Chicago/Northern Indiana winters would be worth it)!

If you’re listening to your heart, it sounds like Tulane is the place for you. It has a great premed program and a fine medical school. It’s one of the best places in the country for Latin American Studies, which will make your Spanish major that much more enjoyable. You can even do Creative Medical Scholars and seamlessly do premed and Latin American Studies or Spanish. Tulane also has a wonderful study abroad program, if you choose to take advantage of it. And you are getting 30K to boot. What’s not to love? (Tulanians really love their school and their unique city.)

To state the obvious, Notre Dame is a fine school as well, in the “can’t go wrong” category. Congratulations on two great options!

Roll wave!

DS is pre med at Tulane, he was waitlisted at ND but would have chosen Tulane anyway. He loves it there especially in our northern winters!

Not sure if you’ve already made your decision, but with a pre-med plan you can get a great education at both of your choices. In premed, your success is up to you more than many other career directions.

Tulane is in such a truly unique city and there are great opportunities in New Orleans for health related activities that would likely be attractive to med schools. That scholarship for Tulane is great too since you have a very expensive education plan with med school.

The weather in New Orleans is oppressive in the summer, but for every other season it’s wonderful. Tulane’s campus is in such a beautiful part of the city and right across the street from the gorgeous Audubon Park. The park is a great place to exercise and unwind. The culture and cuisine of New Orleans is one of a kind. Mardi Gras and Jazzfest, along with parades and festivals for almost any reason, are a blast. Friends will want to come visit you in New Orleans.

South Bend does have its charms and Notre Dame does have its spirit that few other schools can rival. Notre Dame does have a more well known name and alumni network, but for premed that matters less. Tulane opens many doors.

My S almost applied to Tulane, but he’s very sensitive to warm weather and that was the deciding factor. I love New Orleans and was sad when he made that decision.

“South Bend does have its charms…”

Really? Never found anything charming about that city.

Like a couple of other posters, I think you know what you want to do- so do it! This is your moment to step up and make an important decision for yourself. You have done really well in the admissions process, so be proud of all that it has taken to get to this point, stand up tall and own your choice.

Congrats

@rjkofnovi I’ve visited south bend pretty much every other year my entire life, as my mom went to ND and my grandpa lives right nearby. It definitely has its own charm. Have you actually visited before?

OP, it sounds like you’ve already decided on Tulane but just wanted reassurance. Go with your gut.

Both are fantastic schools and will provide what you need for pre-med.

I would choose based on cost and location…

I actually just visited ND and am officially committed. Thank you for all of the responses, though!!

@dunnowheretogo I know you agonized over this decision for a long while. Kudos to you for listening to your own heart and not being persuaded by opinions of others (i.e. the Michigan forum). It seems you are very comfortable with your decision after doing a lot of careful research into the academic programs and introspection as to what school is the best fit for you. Best of luck!

@dunnowheretogo Congrats ND should treat you well. But also thank your parents for being able to send you to ND and pay full price. It is not an opportunity that many kids get. As a parent I wish I could send my D19 to any school she wanted to, but that is not the case.

At Halloween put sure to stick a pumpkin on #1 Moses.

Tulane has a really strong Spanish program, It is very well known in Latin America and personally I think of it as more prestigious than Notre Dame regardless of USNWR.

It would be kind of you to let Tulane know of your decision not to attend as soon as possible as it could potentially free up a spot for someone on the waitlist.

@albertsax Don’t worry. Some posters like RKofnovi go to Michigan. And despite being the home of TB12 and my nice younger brother they can have a chip on their shoulder in regards to ND

They probably get sick of hearing how great it is or losing to them in football. Lol.

@privatebanker Haha, true! It’s definitely tense in my house when ND plays Michigan (my mom is an ND alum and all of my dad’s family went to U of M).

@trackmbe3 Thank you so much! I didn’t know how crazy that Michigan forum would get hahaha but I’m very relieved to be done with this whole crazy process!

@pishicaca already did!! Thanks for the reminder though — I know a lot of students forget and then the people on the waitlist have to wait even longer
