Notre Dame vs UT Austin

i'm deciding between the university of notre dame and the university of texas at austin. i'd love to go to either one but i'm not sure which one.
ut is closer to home so i can come home whenever i need to but i like the environment of notre dame. what other reasons are there for me to choose one over the other?

Well, Austin is an awesome city with lots to do. The music scene is incredible by itself. UT is a very good public school with some excellent programs, especially the honors ones.

On the other hand, Notre Dame is much smaller than UT, and has incredible spirit. It's generally better, academically speaking, and has a lot of wonderful traditions.

None of this, of course, takes cost into account.

Go to UT.

I have a bunch of friends on the ND waiting list. But really, ND is a great school and so is UT. Personally, i would choose ND, but thats just me.

It is impossible to say really with what you have given us. I keep trying to respond on these posts and it is impossible. Give us at least an idea of what is important to you and how important all the different factors are and then we can try to give you an assessment. I don't want to blindly say ND if I don't know that it is right for you; I have to know what you want to know if it is right if that makes sense.

Wow, this is weird, I stumbled upon this page, and this is my exact dilemna right now.

This probably isn't the same as whippersnapper, but I'm going to expand on my thought process.

As far as UT Austin goes, it's about an hour and a half away, I have lots of friends going there, I love Austin and the state of Texas, and UT is supposed to have an excellent engineering program. I also have many relatives that live in Austin.

For ND, my dad went there, as well as many people on his side of the family. I really like ND's band (I plan on marching for either college). I went to a football game this past year, and I have to say, the atmosphere is amazing, with a beautiful campus. However, it's very far away, and I don't know anyone going there.

I know I would have a great time at UT, but ND would take some adjusting to, although I still think it would be fun. Also, ND cost over twice as much as UT, and I didn't get any financial aid. That shouldn't really get in the way of where I want to go, but it's always in the back of my mind. ND and UT are pretty much opposite on the political spectrum, and I'm pretty moderate. One more thing, I'm kind of a shy guy, but that shouldn't matter that much. Decisions, decisions...

I wouldn't have thought UT would be that liberal. The decision you are making is one most ND students face: to take a cheaper, more comfortable option closer to home or to take a chance with ND. A good question to ask yourself is, 'Have I ever met anyone associated with ND that didn't absolutely love the place?' Personally, I havn't. I know that a lot of ND accepted students have free rides available to them from other quality schools, but it's just a matter of deciding whether the benefits of the cheaper, more comfortable, closer school is worth giving up the ND experience for.

I agree with tmanw88.

I know people at UT and it's cheaper. It'll be fun.
I don't know anybody at ND. It would be a whole new experience.

I'm kind of shy so it's hard for me to meet new people but something in me wants to go for something new. I kind of want to go somewhere not everybody is at. As someone said, everybody and their mother goes to UT.

Everbody I ask is telling me to go to ND.

What are you going to be majoring in?

Although UT Austin’s business school and engineering schools rank MUCH HIGHER than Notre Dame’s, if you’re going to major in those two, perhaps you should go to Notre Dame since the name itself could help you land a job. However, you won’t be making that much more than UT graduates with those same degrees, if you do. Recruiters are well aware of the national rankings of university programs, and UT’s business school and engineering school are top notch.

IF you want to major in anything else, then go to UT. UT offers way more degree programs than Notre Dame. And UT’s resources, such as financial resources, student resources, faculty resources, are superior to anything Notre Dame has.

I will say that academics are tougher at UT. At Notre Dame, you can have a 1.8 GPA and still be in good standing, so if you want tougher academics, then go to UT.

bb4NYC… WHAT? First of all, why resurrect a thread from FOUR YEARS AGO? I am pretty sure the OP has made a decision by now. Second, what you are saying is not based in fact. I won’t even respond, it is just wrong. Please provide citations for your information, especially the rankings. I can cite rankings that differ.

bb4NYC-
You might want to check your facts before posting incorrect information in so many threads. So…other than First Year Studies, the cut-off for academic probation is 2.0 gpa, the same as most other universities. Not only that, but most other colleges it is a cumulative average. At ND, a student is on academic probation if he falls below 2.0 for any semester.

Most ND students were top 5% of their HS class. The average ACT is now >33, Probably not a big worry about the average ND student falling off a cliff gpa-wise.

From ND’s handbook regarding academic probation:

First-semester students in the First Year of Studies: minimum semester average of 1.700.
Second-semester students in the First Year of Studies: minimum semester average of 1.850.
All others: minimum semester average of 2.000
