Notre Dame's cross admit preference numbers

From a (gasp) rival college site (my chances dot net) an interesting tool to compare when a student is admitted to 2 schools, what percent choose Notre Dame over the rival school:

50 to 50% vs Northwestern
87 to 13% vs Boston College
56 to 44% vs Georgetown
50 to 50% vs Cornell
40 to 60% vs Wash U in St Louis
50 to 50% vs Vanderbilt
28 to 72% vs Duke
60 to 40% vs Michigan
67 to 33% vs Illinois

Backup College clap clap clapclapclap

backup college???

Notre Dame students often call Boston College “backup college”

There was a very interesting research study published several years ago on this subject titled “A Revealed Preferences Ranking of U.S. Colleges and Universities”. The authors were from Harvard, Stanford, Boston Univ, and Yale. The premise was that students admitted to multiple schools would “reveal” the better schools by choosing to matriculate there.

Using admit and matriculation data from over 3,000 students, the study determined the probability of a student selecting one school over others to which he had been admitted. Interesting read.

Incidentally, Notre Dame did very well in this study, ranked as the 13th most desirable school, just below Penn and just above Swarthmore and ahead of all the schools cited by the OP, including Duke, Northwestern, and Cornell.

Originally it was a free download, but unfortunately it appears there is now a fee to download.

S chose it over BC, Vanderbilt, and Duke. Didn’t apply to any of the others on the lsit. One anecdotal point, I know–just to let you know these real people exist on cc.

I chose BC over ND. Not all people see BC as backup college.

Hey collegekid9, you are right. About 13% don’t I guess.

The arrogance of Domers astounds me. It’s sad that people feel the need to put down other great schools like Boston College to convince themselves that Notre Dame is still superior to them all. If you go to the BC threads, the only comments about Notre Dame are complimentary, and no one refers to any other colleges in a negative manner. Boston College is a great school, and Domers should appreciate other great Catholic schools that are rising in the rankings. Yes Notre Dame is ranked higher consistently, but that does not mean all people that go to Notre Dame are superior to those that go to BC.

I have no affiliation with BC, however, in all fairness, I don’t seem to see any statistical percentages in the OP’s post that refer to the stats of students who would consistently choose any one of the Ivy League schools (or Berkeley or Stanford for that matter) over ND?

Just sayin’.

Who put down Boston College? I just cited some cross preference statistics. Don’t be so sensitive.

Sorry – just noticed Cornell in that original post – but that’s shown as a 50-50%, and I’d say that was generous.

Generous for who? I would guess that Notre Dame is much more of a first choice school for people than Cornell is. Cornell is usually the #5 backup for the “I have to go to an Ivy crowd”. People who go to Notre Dame WANT to be at ND. People who go to Cornell are ****ed they didn’t get in Harvard, Yale, Princeton etc. I would bet the actual cross admit numbers for ND vs Cornell are much higher in favor of ND over time. This sample size may be small.

I would refer to backup college as a put down. It’s confusing why Notre Dame dislikes BC more than BC dislikes Notre Dame considering Notre Dame wins the cross admit battle.

I didn’t say backup college, that was someone else. I didn’t even know that was used as a putdown for BC students. Oh the nasty things college kids will say…Dude, grow some thicker skin and get used to it. Its good natured ribbing. BC and ND students get along and are very similar, and there is a mutual respect among ND and BC, especially since we are the only 2 Catholic schools that play D1 football. Stop fretting so much or you’re going to be a suicide case by the middle of the first semester.

It is though, the backup college. I mean bc over nd. Hahaha! It cracks me up!

Interesting I chose Notre Dame over WashU(Olin), Georgetown(MCD), Duke(Trinity), Northwestern(Medill), and …Hopkins…and a couple of others!

I still say that most kids (most, not all) would still choose an Ivy over ND. Absolutely nothing against ND, great school – but you can’t seriously say it’s on the same par with Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth.

Notice that rhodesway, while he chose ND over some other very highly-ranked schools, did not pass-up an Ivy to go to ND.

Again, just sayin’. I feel badly for the BC kids about the whole “backup college” thing.

The Ivies are overrated. For undergrad education and experience, atmosphere, ND does not take a back seat to anyone.
