<p>Both words, sympathetic and apologetic have the same connotation, but apologetic seems to overdo it, by a lot. The author is not getting out of his way for Descartes, he mentioned his stance was not criticism towards Descartes. So what would he be apologizing for? Sympathetic does the job.</p>
