My son has narrowed his decision down to Case Western, Villanova and Rose Hulman. He has been admitted in engineering programs of all these schools but hoping to do both engineering and business (maybe minor) since he want to open a technology Corp. in the future. Any comments on the programs would be appreciated. Thank you!

Any opinions??

Well, engineering and business are two of Nova’s strengths so that would seem a natural fit based on the combination of those interests.

One of the things Nova offers is a Summer Business Institute (SBI). It’s an intensive program but those who complete it graduate with an actual business minor. I think that’s a good option for solving potential class scheduling conflicts and managing workload during the actual school year.

That said, even if he went to Case or RH he could still enroll in Nova’s Summer Business Institute. The only difference is that it would not show up as a minor on his transcripts.

Other than that, the only drawback might be the cost. I think SBI is in the neighborhood of $10k all inclusive.

Villanova is probably the best of the three for both business and engineering. Rose Hulman has the best engineering program of the three.

Strictly engineering then Rose-Hulman is the best, although not by too much. For masters institutions us news ranks Rose hulman as #2 and Villanova as #10 in their engineering programs. For Business Villanova is ranked #13 by business week and case is #36. For strictly business Villanova would be the best choice.

For overall academics I think the choice would be between Case and Villanova. You can decide from the list of facts I pulled up, but I think Villanova is a little better and also keep in mind that social and cultural life play a role. I dont know anything about the social scene at Case or rose hulman.

Retention rate at Case 91% at Nova 95%
student faculty ratio at Case 9/1 at Nova 11/1
Avg Sat score at Case 1340 at Nova 1310
Acceptance rate at Case 60% at Nova 40%

Case Western has the strongest reputation overall in academia–it is one of the remaining truly solid academic schools with an acceptance rate > 50%. Perhaps its location and lack of social prestige have held it back from becoming a top tier university in the minds of the lay public, but in the academic community, it has a solid reputation, surpassing that of the other two mentioned institutions. I would still recommend Villanova, however, for your interest in business and engineering, as well for the better quality of life.
