November auditions

We went to the November auditions and it was great. UofM is huge. It sounds like most kids will get either a “deferred” or denied in about 4 weeks. They said they rarely give an admit this early. Has anyone ever gotten an admit in December? The suspense this year is going to be tremendous.

U of Mich says they pick only 1 of the monologues and only 1 of the songs for you to perform. Do they always just do one? And do they seem to have a preference...comedy v dramatic.....ballad v uptempo?

If they want to hear more, they'll have you sing/act the other one, too, but in general they only pick one. Hard to say whether there's a preference between ballad v uptempo...honestly, I doubt it. In my audition, they picked my ballad (which also happened to be my pre-1965 piece), but of the few people I overheard singing before me, some sang uptempo, some ballad, some contemporary, some classic. I don't think there's a method to it; it's probably just whatever they want to hear. As for acting, Professor Madama actually had me pick the monologue I wanted to perform. Don't know if that's ordinary or not.

acsh, when you auditioned did you perform your songs and your monologues for the same people, or was it voice faculty for one and acting faculty for the other? And was it just one auditioner or several?

Thanks!

CharlotteStarlet, the piano, voice, and acting (and of course dance) auditions are all in different rooms with different faculty present at each. Brent Wagner (department head), Melody Racine (voice professor), and someone I didn't recognize were the panel at the voice audition. Mark Madama (musical theatre prof) was the only one at the acting audition.
