Now I'm not sure if I'm going to be happy here.

Hi folks! First off congrats to all you who are going to be transferring this fall! I decided to make this post because I needed some advice and or insight. I applied to 3 UCs this fall. UCSC, UCD, UCI. Got into SC, wait listed to Davis, and rejected by Irvine. I was very sad because Irvine was my top choice.

After thinking things through I decided that SC really wasn't for me. I had a change of heart this year and realized how much I want to be in Southern California. I was thinking about reapplying for Fall 2012, trying again and not making the same silly mistake by applying to a few schools. I lost hope for Davis and didn't think about it but today they accepted me off the wait list and now I don't know if I truly want to go there. It is basically the area that turns me off. I've visited the place. I used to like it but now I feel like it doesn't suit me. If I don't get into Irvine next year, I picture myself being happy at Riverside. People laugh at me and say that I'm crazy to want to go to Riverside over Davis but I think, why not? I feel like it would suit me. I have no intentions going to a UCLA or UCB and I want to go to school in southern California. Some may be thinking, well, why didn't you apply there before? Yes, I made a mistake that thought UCI would take me.

I'm just very confused right now. Everyone is telling me that I'm wasting my time re applying. I finished all my prereqs, IGETC, have above a 3.0, 80 quarter units from a CCC, so I wouldn't know what to do then except maybe get a part time job. I can't TAG to UCI because I took one semester at a CSU and they don't take anyone with any previous coursework from any schools besides a CCC or UC in good standing.

Has anyone ever reapplied? What did you do? How can I improve my application if I want to re apply considering that I'm already done with all of the required classes? Am I being too picky and should I just suck it up? Any stories, advice or opinions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I made the mistake last year of only applying to Berkeley and I was denied. So this year, I decided to apply to all the UCs that had good programs for my major and luckily I was accepted to Berkeley this year. Personally, I hadn’t had all recommended courses taken care of yet so I took them in fall and took a light load in spring since at that point I had everything taken care of.

Only thing I could think of that you could do is either take some cake humanities courses that will help up your GPA or yea, just take a break and job it for the year. Maybe help out here and there and build up some ECs. I tutored some high school students through this past year so maybe that helped me a bit.

I feel you on SC though, after visiting the area, I didn’t like it much either. Davis, although the surrounding area kinda sucks, the city and campus itself is pretty nice. For me, I’m an urban guy born and raised so Berkeley and UCLA were the two schools I really felt comfortable at with SD being a far stretch in comfort. If you don’t feel like you’re going to be comfortable there, don’t go. But if you do decide to go, there’s always something that will help you enjoy your time wherever you go.

If you took a semester outside a CC, then you might want to be careful about the amount of classes you plan of taking. I believe there is a 90 unit max for students that previously attended CSUs and UCs. Also, what would you do if you wait to reapply and not get in again? Anyways, I found out today about UCD too. Now, I’m torn since I’ve been emotionally investing myself to going to UCSC. So, I will also have a lot of thinking to do in the next day or two.

and “there’s always something that will help you enjoy your time wherever you go.” I completely agree.

@Silenthillnight - Glad to hear you got into the school you planned to go to!!! I thought I was the only one reapplying.

@IamJ00 - Congrats on your acceptance to UCD!!! But yeah, sucks being notified so late. :(

The 90 unit max doesn’t apply to lower division courses. My best friend spent a semester at CSU then decided he wanted to go to a UC and change his major. So he went to a CCC, accumulated 100 units, switched to science and got into UCSB this year! I’m also in that similar situation going from CSU, to CCC and now to a UC. You can apply as a junior transfer from a CSU, a different UC (or other University) but of course CCCers get higher priority! They will take only a certain amount of units that you can transfer over.

What is your major? Davis rejected me, but not Irvine.

@MooseDog - What an interesting year. One of my friends got rejected from Irvine but got into LA. I’ve heard other stores. My major is history. I’m going to take a guess, but are you a science major?

@nelise: I was in a somewhat similar situation in 2010. I applied to UCI, UCSD, UCB and UCLA (the latter two just for fun, I knew I wasn’t getting in) with a 3.03 GPA. I’m a poli sci major. I got into UCI (no TAG) but was rejected from UCSD, which is where I had been dead set on going. I visited UCI campus and tried to convince myself that I’d be fine there, but I just couldn’t do it. Then I realized that I only get one shot at this and opted to go to UCI for a quarter, drop out, go back to CC and then reapply for UCSD on TAG, which is where I’m at now :)

I think you should re-appy. Now you’ll have a slight advantage because you finished your math and english. Try to improve your GPA. I think UCI is going to raise their TAG to 3.20

As for UCLA, you should consider applying to a major like Southeast Asian studies, chicano studies, anthro, philosophy…they admit like 60% and if admitted, you could switch into History (yes it’s impacted, but they’ve been letting students switch).

I was rejected in 2010 from UCLA. I improved my GPA and re-applied to UCLA and UCI. I didn’t fill out the TAG form or UCI, but I was still admitted. I feel like I got in because at the time I submitted my app I already have 60 units, math and english completed  I saw others with higher GPAs get rejected.

@nelise, I’m a history major, 3.0 GPA.

You people are scaring me. I’ve spent two years in a CCC already. I told myself that I would get out in 2 years but I feel like I took it easy, not taking classes during the intersessions and the my GPA being a 2.2 by the end of my second Fall semester. I couldn’t apply during that Fall so I’ll be staying a third year. This upcoming Fall I plan to apply to UCLA for Linguistics and Asian Language and Cultures, UCI for Korean and Linguistics minor, and maybe some CSU. My first choice ever was UCI but it’s kind of wavering right now since I want to teach English all over Asia. UCI only has Linguistics as a minor, and even though Korean is my emphasis at the moment, I don’t think I want to major on it.
My current GPA at the end of Second Spring is 3.0. Enough for a TAG for UCI, right? Well, when someone mentioned they’re raising it to 3.2… just… wow. I worked hard to get from 2.2 to 3.0, no lie. HAHAAHAAH!

They count your GPA after this summer if you’re applying for TAG in the fall.

Yeah. I’m currently taking 6 units right now but really it will only raise my GPA up to a 3.1 if I get A’s on both classes.
