i sent in my app on dec. 1st and everything (scores) got in on the 6th of december...but my app hasnt even gotten an initial review yet. how long should i expect to stay at the initial review stage? i really want to get my UW decision!

i submitted my app at the beginning of Oct. and just got a decision 2 weeks ago. i'm guessing you wont get one til late-jan.

Well, they probably got a LOT of apps on Dec. 1 since it was the "priority deadline." People who submitted on Nov 28th have heard, but it may be a while until we do. :/ Darn procrastination.

only the top, top applicants get offered admission in December. It doesn't matter if you applied in sept. oct or nov., only the top ranked students have received admission offers. Everyone else has to wait:D

^Well, that blows if what you say is true. And how the heck do they know whether or not we're one of the "top, top applicants" if they haven't even LOOKED at our apps? :/ I dunno...did you mean recruited athletes? I want to believe that the order in which we submitted our applications makes SOME difference. Blah. 8th choice anyway. Whatevs.

I think UW does 3 separate reviews, so they can and do look at your app before they decide if you're a top student or not. I got an offer this past week (submitted app Nov 26th-ish), but it took 2-3 weeks for an initial review. Then again, I'm out-of-state.

nothing we could do at this moment.
i turned in on nov.30th and everything was entered on data on dec.3rd.
now mine is still awaiting an initial review.(in-state)

relax and best of luck!

As they say, "lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part". You can't really expect to put off applying to till the last possible moment, submit your applications with 10,000 other people, and expect them to go through all that reading in a few weeks.

As far as knowing who a top applicant is without knowledge of the rest of the applicant pool --- that is easy. They have a wealth of statistical data from prior years that allows them to judge the top end of the distribution relatively easily.

I submitted my app on November 30th last year (2006) and my app got the initial review in January. I found out in late April that I got in. I wasn't a waitlist or anything, 3.8uwGPA/2000SAT. Didn't get direct admit to the business school so I had to apply separately (running start got me 100 credits)

Ehh...not exactly what I was talking about. I know it's easy for them to decide what would constitute a "top" applicant from the data gathered in previous years. I was just saying that silver's comment didn't really make sense because there's no way UW would know whether or not we, personally, are top applicants without an initial review of our applications...unless I'm totally misunderstanding/underestimating what an "initial review" entails...

Oh well. We've waited this long already; another few months shouldn't kill us. :) GL, everyone.

We've been waiting to hear on my S's application. He definitely turned his app in before December 1st and it might have been as early as November 25th. I would think he would be a "top" applicant with his 3.98 UW GPA, 8 AP classes and 2320 SAT scores. A friend of his - who submitted after him and is not as strong overall - got his acceptance letter December 31st. My theory is that they may be working through the initial group alphabetically. If so, my S will have to wait longer... his friend's last name is three letters ahead.

Fortunately, my S is not all that concerned and hasn't been stalking the mail box daily or anything like that. :-) Since classes don't start until September, January still seems a bit early to be pushing the panic button.

Don't forget that you can go into your MYUW and click on "unofficial transcript" and if it comes up with some information and a student number, you are in, a good week before you actually get a letter.

Alphabetically makes sense. I'll be waiting for months, then, since I'm almost at the very, very end. :P

Olyman, thanks for the tip.

I submitted my app at 10:45pm on Dec 1. It was entered into their database on Dec 3. As of today (Jan 2), my app is awaiting review, instead of initial review like it was before. Don't know if that helps at all...

My friend submitted his app on Nov 30 and his app status changed to awaiting review a few days ago. We're both middle of the alphabet.

Hey mine is almost the same with doitalktoomuch's

My son went onto his MyUW this afternoon and discovered that his application went into the actual committee/admissions review process on December 26th. Maybe they will get to those last five letters of the alphabet sooner than you think!

I'm not sure about the alphabetical order theory. I'm OOS, and my last name is just about at the end of the alphabet. I submitted my app on Nov 24th, and my decision was mailed out on Dec 21 (and I found out around Christmas). My stats are about the same as those in Post #11 ("3.98 UW GPA, 8 AP classes and 2320 SAT scores"). There probably is a combination of factors, one of which, simply being the time of submission.

Today it says all materials have been rec'd, and it's advanced to the full review process.

I was kidding about the alphabetical theory. I imagine that as the applications came through they likely assigned a number to them and are going as fast as they can. I know my son's has been in full review since December 26th... we anxiously await the mail daily. Nothing today. Maybe tomorrow!

Mine is awaiting review as of jan 2 08.. Here's hoping it goes into review soon! :)
