Now is the time to bribe your way into an elite school

Interesting article on how the economy is (allegedly) affecting admissions:

The Year to Bribe Your Way In - The Daily Beast

Thanks for the link. Interesting article, though no surprise.

I like the "Do your Homework " part.
I will keep that in mind when I get my inheritance.
Thanks Katliamom.

the only difference is, all the Wall Street peeps who were the majority of the donors, now don’t have enough $$ in their bonuses to keep the chauffeurs, the nanny, the personal assistant, private school AND give $5mm donations to the college they want their little ones to attend…such a shame…lol

actually rodney, it is a shame, not a lol, since those donations were what made it possible for kids whose parents could not afford the sticker price to attend . Private colleges are private. They have a price and everyone who gets accepted to attend, pays to attend, either by check, or by providing the college with a needed commodity (athlete, math genius that plays the violin standing on one foot, etc.). Getting a free or a discounted ride to a college is not a right, its a privillege that is earned with hard work. Conversely, if you can pay the sticker price, doesnt make you a lesser student, it represents either parents thinking far ahead and sacrificing to make sure there is a college fund for their kid, or parents working 80plus hour weeks, making enough money to pay for college as they go along, and feeling generous enough to share the wealth. (those that have enough money to donate 5mm and up, have enough to send their kids to finishing schools and not have them work a day)

Don’t underestimate the Wall Street crowd. As they are well aware that many of the best jobs in the Country are based on top college admission, they are willing to give their last dollars to colleges to ensure their children’s entrance if that’s what it takes. And like everyone else, colleges will take less this year than they did last.

Exactly mhmm, as a parent of 3 in college, I want the donors to keep on giving!

I do think people forget that the wealthy they enjoy trashing are paying the way of many of their kid’s through college.

^Totally agree. How about a little bit of thanks to the big donors for a change?

Great. An entire “article” consisting of nothing but “un-named sources”. Is this really what journalism has come to?

Why should I believe a single work that Ms. Kingsbury writes? Why should I grant her even a shred of credibility?

That’s the thing. It’s not an article. It’s a blog. Blogs don’t have to be verifiable or credible. They’re blogs.

But, I guess you knew this because you put “article” in quotes, right?

interesteddadd, I was going to say the same thing.

This a is one of the worst pieces of crap I’ve ever seen. If you scroll around the website you’ll also find a disgusting attempt to disparage Bobby Jindal because he’s…he’s…he’s a Catholic! I got a kick out of how the author eliminates 75% of Jindal’s resume, then says he’s as inexperienced as BHO. What junk. If you can’t debate the issues, just go for character assassination.

Total garbage. Not a single named source, and only one named college. I call blarney.

just a head’s up: wasn’t trying to trash anybody…sorry if my post was misunderstood…I just don’t really fundamentally believe in developmental admissions in the case of kids who are less than qualified to attend…or ones that have been convicted of a crime…yea, I know developmental kids at Ivies with police records…for dealing drugs actually…

mhmm amd hmom: we actually fall into the “saved since they were born” group, not the "rich are supporting our way " group…

Rodney, how can you say you weren’t trying to trash anyone? You put out this hackneyed, stereotypical string of insults aimed at people who work hard, making fun of their suffering - as you perceive it - then you end it with lol. So you’re not only trashing people, you also think it’s kind of funny when they suffer. Typical socialist class warfare.

I suppose a school can be “need blind”, and not be “development blind”.

“We accepted the kid because his parents gave $5 million, not because the kid didn’t need financial aid”.

Anyone who can give $5 million doesn’t need financial aid.

It’s not just the Wall Street crowd that has less money, it’s all the wealthy around the world. These folks have lost a large part of the net worth’s pretty much universally and the carnage will continue. It’s no joke that giving to colleges and philanthropy in general will be severely impacted for some time…
