Now that it's May, let's talk waitlist.

yeah, apparently.

i’m so disappointed!! do you guys think you will be applying as transfers next year? or have you already moved on mentally/emotionally to the school you put your deposit in at? at the moment i’m interested in possibly applying to transfer next year (this being said without seeing if i will be happy at my second choice in the fall). however i would be nervous about coming in as a sophomore, not knowing anyone, when everyone else already has the established bonds and cliques they made as freshmen. what do you guys think? and if anyone has been a transfer student, can you speak as to the experience?

I’m not planning on transferring. I like the college I matriculated to. :D

Objective789,

According to

the target may actually be just 2025.

@ ensies: I haven’t transferred into NU, but have lots of friends who have transferred in general. It’s honestly not as bad as it seems socially. I guess because college is so much bigger than high school – you meet people everywhere, and I’m pretty sure NU has activities for transfer students to help move them in.

Also - you could fb some people before …like the prefrosh do? Haha you’ll be fine if you do decide to transfer…they are all really happy wherever they ended up.

to emsies: I don’t know if I will be transferring. If I hate UMich, then yeah, i guess i’ll have to deal with the whole problem of transferring. but otherwise, i guess not.

Does anyone thing that it would be worth it to give up the university of michigan after a year to go to northwestern? JUst want some feedback on this.

@UndergroundGamer: May be different for fall (probably is), but winter transfers had zero activities or help whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving it here and I’m so glad I transferred, but the process itself was quite painful.

Sam, the 2125 figure came from admissions, although there may be different “targets” depending on definition. In any event, they filled the class without the waitlist.

sirsteveh: when did you transfer to northwestern? the winter of sophomore year?

My sister got an email last night that they did not take her off the waitlist. However, the email said that they were keeping applications till 2011 just in case students wanted to transfer. They also hinted that students on the waitlist who transfer next year have a high rate of admission.

@sylfar: yup. 4 quarters completed. I only recommend it if 1) it can’t wait (was kind of the case for me, for various reasons), and/or 2) you’re extremely motivated, make friends easily, are willing to make a journey of a thousand miles to get your transfer credits hashed out, etc.

has anyone heard anything?? i didn’t recieve that e-mail stating the waitlist was closed…

They did not use the waitlist per admissions.

Objective,

If that’s the case, it means NU has been quietly making the class bigger and bigger. Did they build a new dorm or something? No wonder its admission rate hasn’t gone down as much as I’d expect.

really? because there were 4 students at my school who were waitlisted and all of them got that e-mail…and i haven’t heard anything so far.
did you (objective) get the e-mail?

Sam

You’re right, the entrance class has enlarged by about 100 over the past few years with a target now around 2,100. Summer melt averages just under 5% so I’d guess without using the waitlist the admissions people hit their target pretty squarely on the head.

Housing hasn’t been an issue even at this level - the occupancy rate for on-campus buildings historically hovered in the high 90’s still usually leaving at least 100-200 open spots around campus (a lot fewer now, but the rooms are still there). Elder Hall (all freshmen) and it’s small northern siblings are being combined into a unified dorm structure as we speak (construction’s underway) - I’m not aware that this will add or subtract beds. No other new construction to expand housing (yet).

Despite the larger freshman class and increase in diversity, the acceptance rate has fallen to a record low, the percentile of admits in the top 10% of their HS class is at a record high, and the average SAT scores for admitted students is up once again, now standing at 1473.

All around, a great year for Northwestern in freshmen recruiting, unfortunately a tough year to be applying.

Bala,

Where did you get the average SAT?
