I have a few questions for anyone in the Gettysburg community!

Parents Weekend - I am looking forward to this event. Are there any tips on things not to be missed? I have heard that the campus tour on Sunday morning is fantastic! Is the campus/town crazy busy during this weekend?

Finals & Dorm's Closing: From what I gather my child has an exam on the last day of exams. I probably can not get him out of Gettysburg until the next day (Sunday) - how quickly do they shut down the dorms & does the campus become a ghost town the last few days of exams?

Overall - how are things going for everyone?

My D is very happy. What a relief. She got off to a rough start due some banking frustrations and a bad cold. But, now she has found her “peeps” and is thriving. She has joined the APO service fraternity and decided not to run track. We’re a little about the track decision, but it’s completely up to her.

I don’t have any insight about Family Weekend. I think we’ll just play it by ear. Don’t know about the dorms, either. Sorry.

I went to Family Weekend last year, but I’m not going this year. Instead, I am going to visit the weekend before that–this coming weekend. Wooohooo! I just didn’t feel Family Weekend had enough going on. I wasn’t interested in attending any sports events. I would have liked to attend a few of the mini-courses that were offered to parents, but then I would have missed time with my daughter. (I don’t think students were allowed at these lectures.) There was an outdoor luncheon one day, but we arrived near the end of it and they ran out of a few of the salads. The Civil War tour on Sunday (is that the one you are talking about?) did look really interesting, but I had to leave early Sunday in order to be home at a reasonable hour. There were a lot of people, but it didn’t seem overly crowded at any time.

As far as finals, my daughter had one on Friday last semester, and this semester she will be there until the bitter end on Saturday. She did say it was a little bit strange toward the end last year because it was so quiet, but the advantage to that is it is easier to find a study spot in the library. She seemed to recall that a lot of the dining venues closed before her last day, too. Dorms officially close at 10 am Sunday, but I’m not sure how strictly that is enforced. Students have to have their RA inspect their rooms before they leave, so I’m guessing 10 am is set so the RAs can leave then. You might want to have your student check with their RA to see if that time is set in stone or if it is a bit flexible, or to ask if there is a “holding area” (CUB?) where students can wait if their rides can’t make it by 10 am.

Thanks for the helpful information about the dorms closing for winter break. I will pass it along to my son that he should speak with his RA.

I had heard that the Civil War tour was very interesting so we are going to try and make that event. We are looking forward to seeing the school in action. We are also looking forward to eating at SERVO (or at least stopping in for a cookie) as we hear that the food is really good!

So far all is going well for our son. He was a little behind in figuring out reading days (did not realize that it was a break and many students were leaving campus) so we had some last minute travel plans to arrange but it all worked out. He took the shuttle to the airport that process went smoothly.
