Ok so I've seen a lot of questions about scholarships and thought we should condense it to one thread. What is the likliehood of getting a scholarship, especially if you weren't offered scholarship day?? At this point its all gonna be about money for me...

are scholarship day invites issued later, or only if youre from certain schools? im a little confused myself

Yeah I was going to make this post too because that is what decides where I go.

From what I've heard, there is a second round of Scholarship Day invitations sent after the RD pool is considered. Hopefully the top part of the ED pool who didn't receive invites will get one in the coming months. Can anyone verify?

That's how it was 2 yrs ago. And, I believe there were some people who were offered $$ who didn't get invited to any Scholarship Days. If you are OOS, getting a scholarship is a sweet deal...actually better for you than it is if you're from NC!!! For Carolina Scholars and the Wm. Davie award, it's a set money award for in-state students, but covers tuition, fees, room and board for OOS students.

I did some searching around--it looks like we have until tomorrow to hear back.

Oh darn now i'm nervous but I guess if I don't get it I know I'll be at Ohio State next year, that would be less stress.

oh bummer.

"Students from each deadline who are considered for merit scholarships will be invited to campus for a "Scholar Day". The early admission scholar day is held in late January and the regular admission scholar day is held in late March. Students are then notified following the scholar day of their merit scholarship offer."

So, I'm guessing then that all who are getting a scholarship have their invites for the first scholar day. Since I didn't get an invite, guess I am not getting a scholarship.

^ I'm not sure if that is true. Say the top people in the Regular Decision pool all scored a 30 ACT. There are plenty of people who applied ED and would be better candidates, and would probably be given a higher priority consideration for a scholarship.

It depends on the entire class of 2013, not based solely on the date that you applied for, or at least it makes logical sense to have a system like that.

Congrats to everyone! I've read somewhere that March 1st is the deadline for priority financial aid. Random but useful fact.
Please help me with mine! ;D

Can we get that invite if we're already a finalist for the Morehead?

Can we get that invite if we're already a finalist for the Morehead?

Does applying for the Robertson via the Robertson Supplemental form have any effect on normal scholarship receipt?

I don't have any real knowledge of this, but based on my own personal experience and that of people I know, Morehead/Robertson finalists don't usually get invited to scholarship day (that is, I don't know any who did). At the same time, it is not uncommon for those folks to still end up getting merit scholarships through the University if they don't receive the Morehead/Robertson.

thanks luxlibertas. i'm in the same kind of situation as ephemeral, morehead candidate, accepted, but no scholarship day invite.

Students are invited to attend EA scholarship day regardless of their Morehead-Cain finalist status (Robertson finalists aren't determined until February). Obviously, you relinquish the UNC scholarship if you are offered a MHC or a Robertson. The admissions crew addressed this issue at Scholarship Day last year, and there were MHC finalists and Robertson applicants in attendance. The MHC Foundation and UNC are separate entities and do not share applications unless UNC admissions refers an applicant to MHC.
Last year, Scholarship Day participants were told that they were invited based primarily on the strength/content of their essays; essays are culled by admissions from the applicant pool and forwarded to a faculty panel to make recommendations for scholarship money. I would imagine there must be grade and test score thresholds, as well.

From the comments section:

"If I ame [sic] out-of-state and have not been invited to Scholarship Day, should I assume that I will not be receiving any merit aid (other than perhaps NMST or the scholarships with special applications), or do some EA admits sometimes get invited to the March Scholars Day?"

Response from Erin Breese:
"Merit-scholarship question:
The majority of deadline-one applicants who will receive a merit award were invited to Scholarship Day. However, there are a few that will be awarded later in the spring."

do the invitations for scholarship day come with our official decision letters? or are they sent out earlier? which it really wouldn't make sense to send out invites to an event abour scholarships if you aren't officially accepted. i am very confused and i would love a straight answer on this, preferably from someone who actually received said invitation.

My son received an invitation to scholarship day on Dec. 24, well before he found out that he was officially accepted. Scholarship Day is on Jan. 30, so I suppose they wanted to let the invitees know as soon as possible.

ok. thanks so much for clearing that up for me Sparrow.
