Now that we're in, what next?

Ok fellow future UChicagoians. What's next. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the process after those sweet words of acceptance so I'm hoping one of you can help make up some of the lost time. I heard from someone that their e-mailing fin-aid packages tomorrow. I haven't got the mail so I can't really say what my move will be.

One thing that has me worried is that I totally bombed a calc. test today, probably dropping my grade down to a B-. Due to college apps and extra-curricular activities, I'm barely holding my line when it comes to GPA. For senior semester its probably going to be 4 As and 2 Bs. Will this cause recination of admissions offer? That would be a completely nightmare. What if I get a C?

lmao there is no way 2 B's will cause them to rescind your offer.

A C wouldn't be good, but that probably won't do it either.

Just don't drop to a D or F, and you'll be fine. 3.0 GPA senior year won't get your admission offer rescinded.

No no no you are good with those grades. It's gonna be fine!!! I don't have a lot of experience in this area, but from what I hear it takes 2 Cs or a D or F to even get a response out of the college, let alone rescinding admission. The Bs are fine, plenty of people get admitted with more Bs than that!

Now it is filling out the glorious housing questionnaire that comes with your accpetance in the mail! (It's not due forever, b/c you have till May 1st to respond to the offer of admission)

And they are giving us estimates of fin. aid packages tomorrow, not an actual package. This is because they don't have the FAFSA or this years tax forms yet (impossible to do for early round admissions).

Right now, I advise a little relaxing and celebrating!

Hey, somebody should set up a facebook group for one of those prospective student weekend deals.

I'd like to meet some people before I show up =D

And actually, and sadly, I've started to have serious reservations about UofC's strong academic standing, considering the elimination of the Uncommon App, the "fratification" if you will, and this Maroon article: http://maroon.uchicago.edu/online_edition/viewpoints/2006/11/28/embracing-negativity-at-the-u-of-c-is-a-choice-reject-it/

But to their credit, at least there exists a self-corrective spirit that can identify and rectify problems. But I don't know if I'm willing to risk it when this article points out that essentially the soul of UofC is on the line.

But before that, MORE CELEBRATION!!

Oh can it about the Common App already! Put the two apps next to each other, what is different??? Pretty much just THE CRAZY ESSAYS. Now what is going to be carried over from the Uncommon if they adopt the Common? THE CRAZY ESSAYS. /Rant

I don't think everything that goes on at the school is perfect, but if anything UChicago's soul was on the line a few years back when the Core got reformed. This new crap about the Common App is chump change as soul-searching goes.

what's next is the longest 9 months of your life.

a few things:

threnody, I think your point is well-taken. But do realize that there not only exists that "self-corrective" attitude as you described it, but the vast majority of students at the school are quite unsatisfied with this new policy. In fact, due to a protest that was held, the school decided to keep both the UnCommon and Common applications as options, instead of just totally getting rid of the uncommon app. I think to say that the soul of the UofC is on the line is a bit strong, but do understand that most of the people there share your concerns completely, and that if any chances are going to be made, they wont have a noticeable impact in the school for at least a decade... long after you´ve left it. Basically: YOU BETTER ATTEND!!! heheh... congrats..

In terms of what to look forward to:

Chicago´s email-sending habit after you are admitted is incessant. First, however, I would suggest filling out the housing info and sending in the deposit as soon as you are absolutely sure you are going to attend. The reason for that is that your housing placement partially depends on the order that it was received. I had a friend of mine get in EA, wait until right before May 1st to send in his housing info, and be placed in his 4th choice building. Since everyone gets to pick their dorms at Chicago, they each develop unique characteristics, so you def. want your best shot at being placed where you´d like it the most (they are all awesome, though).

After you are done with that, the college programming office will set-up the class website. There will be a place for you to post pics, and more importantly, a bulletin board for you to talk to your classmates. During the long summer, that bulletin board becomes quite addictive... especially during those days in which all of your friends will have left for school but you are still home. It´s def. something to look forward to...

Finally, the next mailings will consist of a bunch of info regarding the school, what to bring, things you need to fill-out and send before O-week (like immunization forms) and registration for all sorts of stuff.

Needless to say, though, I dont think you´ll be receiving anything in the mail quite as exciting as that letter...

Congrats everyone!!!

First thing you need to do?

Go find your teachers and counselors who wrote your recs and give them a BIG hug. I actually went back to school after I had already come home to tell them the news, I was so excited. ;)

Then yeah, if you're sure you're going to UC there's a huge packet full of housing info, and the sooner you get it in the better. I'm not sure whether I'm going or not yet-- the financial factor is a HUGE deal for me and I'm still waiting for one more school-- but I'm going to come up with a list of questions and get in touch with my admissions counselor sometime. I met him personally a couple of times this semester so I'm going to try to keep in touch and make sure I continue to show some interest... Admission is only half the battle for me. Finding ways to pay for it is the other (and scarier) half.

BTW about those April visit weekends... does anyone know if they can help you with transportation? I live about a 12 hour drive away... :P (Yeah, that's one of the questions for my admission counselor I guess.)

Still-- I second drummerdude's motion-- relax and celebrate!!! Congratulations everybody! This is an amazing time for all of us!

Hooray for those who got in!

Just curious, is it Chicagoan or Chicagoist?

Chicagoan. Everybody who's in, you should just chill out and enjoy the last couple months of high school. Hang out with your friends, blow off homework (not too much though) and have some fun.

I don't know where I read this, but somewhere the University actually recommended avoiding serious and academic things in the summer before arriving in Chicago.

I don~t know about the summer before... I do know that they HIGHLY encourage you to take it really lightly the summer after your first year.
