Now, THIS is a bad example of a college list.

UPenn Huntsman
Georgetown SFS
Harvard
Princeton
YAle
Stanford
Columbia
Dartmouth
Chicago
Berkeley
Duke
Johns Hopkins
and

NYU

Am I crazy?

Yes, you are crazy if that is really your list. Of course, you didn't share your academic information. What is your expected major? What are you looking for in a college? What makes you so sure you would get into one of those schools? Have you heard of safeties and matches?

The first step is RECOGNIZING you have a problem, and you certainly have done that!

Now go about searching for safeties like your state school, and other places which you will get into but would not mind going there :)

Time to research!

How are your stats looking? Its hard to tell how bad this list is without knowing those...

other than being a list of some of the most prestigious colleges, there is no apparent rhyme or reason to this list. Columbia AND Dartmouth? Chicago AND Yale? The only way to get something sillier would be to put the top 50 names into a hat and draw out 10.

Oh, I'm international. not applying for FA.

Here we go.

SAT1: W 800, M 780, C 730 for NEW SAT
2:Math2C(800),Literature(720),US(720) , Korean(800) lol
AP:CalcBC(5),Micro(5),U.S/Comparative Gov(4),Macro (5), Pscychology (5), U.S History (4)

GPA: 4.19 out of 3, weighted. 3.87 unweighted out of 4.

EC: only the things I really like

MUN (11-12)
- President of the Security COuncil/in school
- Delegate of China in ECOSOC (2004)/in an international MUN
- Delegate of China in General Assembly (2004)/in a national MUN
- Delegate of China in SEcurity COuncil (2005)/in a international MUN
- To be Delegate of Benin in Disarmament and Security Conference/ in national MUN

-> a few awards such as Future U.N Delegate etc.

International Relations Conference held by a top uni. in the U.S (for reasons, I can't mention the exact name !)

International Rotary Club - INTERACT (11-12)
founded the club, currently the president.

President of the Debate Society (2003.2004.2005)

Internship at the Congress COmmittee on Foreign Affairs for 1 month (2005)

Internship at American Miscellaneous Corporations(international trade company) for 1 month (2004)

Internship at an international cultural exchange organization under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs(2004)

Internship at the Presidential Office (2005)

Vice Chief / Female Representative of the 7th Student Guidance Council

Student Representatives Manager of International Students Society(2004.2005)

2 papers, and am currently writing another one
- One on the impeachment system (22 pages double spaced)
- One on Chinese future oil resources ( 19 pages double spaced)
- and I'm writing a 50 page thesis on the North Korean Nuclear Crisis.

State Award for Meritorious Award
Appointed Cyber Ambassador from a very influential NGO
various in school awards

dance, swimming, tennis, piano, traditional instruemnt

and a whole load of awards and positions which I think are less significant...

I know I look like a totally arrogant nerd.... but,

no, I actually am not planning to go to any universities other that aren't compatible with my current list, and if I don't get in, I'm thinking of just going to a university within my country.

Oh, and I have done alot of research, actually ;)

There IS a rhyme to my choice

All schools are either renowned in international relations, economics or business which are the prospective fields I want to major in.

So, please do suggest to me some schools which I have left out in the list that do indeed have notable programs in the above majors.

Thanks :)

Tufts- international relations- but you might not get in with those stats....(Tufts Syndrome)

dude, my list is almost the same as yours, lol.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=94101

When I applied to school out of high school my list was:

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Brown
Columbia
Duke
Northwestern

and

Michigan (I got accepted WAY early in the process since they are rolling). That might be my only recommendation, I think you might do this as well as a safety, otherwise I think your strategy is fine. My only regret was in fact not applying to a couple more reaches. You are a top student, a few of these will work out.

Chances are you'll get into one or more of them, but you most likely don't want to take that risk (see featured discussion by andimom for information). Anyway, I'd also suggest you look at Cornell--it has at least decently strong programs in all fields you've mentioned (hopefully Alexandre can back me up on this). And I don't just say that because I go there (though I do have a bit of a bias...).

Tufts Syndrome - rubbish. Doesn't exist.

you pwn me

Man, that list looks pretty close to my friend's list for college. He's our valedictorian and an officer in like a billion of our school clubs and thinks that no college (except for his safety UT) will accept him. Pretty crazy.

Anyways, as for you, I think you should probably narrow your list a little to include not just reaches/Ivies but also some safeties and matches. I don't think there's any need to apply to 12+ schools cause you might end up getting only accepted into the one you like the least.

honestly, your ECs look weak. They don't seem to have depth (everything was the last 2 years?).

and I hope you don't submit your application without the name of that mysterious "top US University".

I think you should get a rolling admission school, like Michigan to apply to early and if you get in, send the apps to all those schools. Even though your list appears poorly researched.

I agree that the schools on your list only have one thing in common: they are good schools. Might want to focus a little more on lifestyle.

sorry if i missed something, but have you done any volunteer work?

pepero, is this the list of all the universities you're applying to, or only the universities in the US? If these are the only ones you're applying to, then I'd be a little bit worried. Otherwise, if you're going to apply to some in your homeland (and you didn't list them here), and you know for sure that you can get in, I think your list would be okay.

In some ways, my thinking about universities in the US is similar to yours; I either want to go the top universities in the US/programs that aren't offered in Canada. If I can't get into the top, then I'll stay in Canada (where admissions is easier, and tuition is cheaper)

-yes, I have a list of school in my country which I'd definitely get into.

Adcoms know that students applying from Asia don't have as many resources as others in the states to pursue ECs all through middle school and high school. I do have other ECs but these are the ones I wanted to emphasize as my 'strongs' relating to international relations and debate and all that stuff.

I did alot of volunteer service, over 300 hours and just in case you didn't see, I made an internationally recognized community service club.

My lifestyle, I really do prefer cities but I really don't mind at all since the high school I'm in right now is in the middle of nowhere, 40 minutes to the closest town so as long as it's not like this, it's fine and I'm thinking the dormitory and food will all be quite okay.
