Now what..?

Well, I'm probably echoing many new posts on CC as of last night but, I just need someone to listen because no one at home will. I was wait-listed at every. single. Ivy. League. school. that I applied too. I perceived myself to be competitive (36 ACT/3.98 GPA, strong EC's, powerful essays). But, I guess not. I recognize the amount of talent an Ivy applicant pool presents and to those of you accepted - I am honestly and most sincerely happy for you and hope that you take full advantage of the opportunity you have just received. I'm not trying to complain simply because I realize everyone who got in, deserves it. Neither am I ranting that I am entitled to admission simply because of one test score. I guess I'm just lamenting? Anyhow, this is my little ode to last night. I just don't know what to do, now. So much was riding on this. The Ivies were deified to me by family and friends for so long. The past few months have been full of "Oh, if you don't get in, no one will!" and other self esteem boosters. And I truly divulge that I did not succumb to the flattery and believe myself entitled to admissions. But it's just like, now what do I do? This league of schools was thrusted upon me so heavily and my family was so immersed with excitement as I applied, that now all I feel is that I've let them down, not even myself.

At least you were waitlisted and not downright rejected…stay on the waitlists and see what happens. Good luck!!

Were you accepted anywhere?

Yes, the waitlist thing seems out of control! DS was waitlisted at 5 schools! I just look at it as the schools protecting their yield.

Waitlist is as good as a NO in my opinion. The number of kids on the waitlists is so high compared to the number who actually get in off the waitlist, I think you just have to move on.

Don’t feel bad, ram0276, a LOT of kids are in the same place. I’m sure you did get into somewhere that you like and can afford to attend, right?

You pick a college or university that doesn’t routinely play football against Dartmouth, you go there, and you build your future.

Your family and friends probably meant well, but they surely did you no favor by messing with your head that way. I am awfully sorry about that.

Yeah, I was accepted to GWU, CMU, Brandeis, Bowdoin, and UMichigan and UNC-CH.

Congratulations. (I know it rings hollow, but I mean it.) You have lots of great options. I’m sorry you didn’t get what what you were hoping for.

Yes, the ivies bring a level of prestige but there are schools right up there in terms of academics. But I feel there is a huge difference between the grouping HPY and some of the other ivies. THere are non ivy schools I’d pick over Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, etal in an instant. Two of my kids turned down Cornell for non ivy choices.

Wallrus, no, but I am saying that a large and growing number of colleges and universities command just as much attention and respect–and deserve to.

Well an IVY education may command prestige but if your in the bottom half of your class … Well I guess you have " the gentleman’ s “C” ( old terminology). That will not get you very far! Bowdoin is a spectacular school! Do well there and your last stop may be an ivy … That is if you choose them!
Congratulations !!!

Uh-oh, someone’s extrapolating the Northeast, and specific industries, to the whole country. The Ivies are all terrific schools, but there are many more also-terrific schools and there are vast swathes of the country in which Ivies don’t have any special magical dust compared to other universities. There’s really no reason beyond an athletic conference to isolate those 8 out of the nation’s top schools. They are simply 8 of the best, not the 8 best.

Well…It looks like the tables have turned, ram. But seriously lol, I think you got into some damn good colleges and you’ll be stellar at any one of them. Sure it may not be recognized by the Ivy name, but regardless several of those schools are great options. And ofc you can also stick it out on the waitlist too. Maybe it didn’t turn out quite as expected, but you and your family should be really satisfied with those very solid choices. Congratz dude

Ok I know that waitlist chances are pretty low. But considering you got waitlisted to EVERY. SINGLE. IVY LEAGUE COLLEGE. Chances are, if you persist, you’ll get into AT LEAST one of them… right?..

I think a person would have to wait-list himself at way more than 8 Ivies in order to make the probability of getting into at least one of them from the wait list greater than 0.5.
