NROTC at UVA

My Son is interested in Naval ROTC and UVA is in top three choices. Looking for info on the unit, expectations, interaction with students on campus, greek life, etc. Have already explored the UVA NROTC site, so what I'm really looking for is hearing from folks on their personal experiences. Thanks

I can tell you a little bit about the unit that i have learned from interacting with the part of the Active Duty staff via email.

The program at UVA has 4 mandatory meeting per week. The first is a battalion (corps of cadets) level Physical Training period, anything from Soccer to Formation runs. This meets once a week. The second is a squad level PT period, which also meets once a week. Obviously, there is also a class included in your schedule once a week, and every ?tuesday? morning there is a mandatory military drill period. The email says that "during this period we have guest speakers, leadership training, Close Order drill practice, and general military training."

Hopes this helps, if you look around at various NROTC units webpages, they will have tidbits of information applicable to the Corps as a whole. The Cadets handbook, with rules of uniform use, level of conduct etc. is very helpful at figuring out the program as a whole.

HungarianPB: Thanks for the info. How were your stats? Just trying to get a picture of what NROTC boards are looking for. If you are not confortable posting, then no worries.

Thanks

3.4 GPA
1220 SATs
4 years NJROTC
1 year Cadet Commander
120 yrs Community Service/year
3 AP, Majority Honors courses
Letter of Rec from a USN Lt. Commander

Basically, they look much more for leadership potential than academic excellence. They gave me the scholarship after the 3rd review board because of my Major Selection. If your son is interested in Majoring in Engineering/Math his stats could be even lower.

Yes, I see you had good leadership positions. But hey, it looks like you took on a very difficult load as well form what I can tell.. Good for you and definitely good luck!! Keep us posted
