My son has accepted the NROTC four-year scholarship and has received his midshipmen orientation package from the battalion at the university. There are a handful of items not addressed and I sent him off to find them out, but figured I'd ask the group here as well.

I assume he needs to inform the university's financial aid department about the scholarship?

how does ROTC pay tuition and fees? Do they pay directly to the school? Do they pay the student, the parent, something else?

any idea regarding the amount of the "stipend for textbooks". I assume that is paid directly to the student each semester, is that correct?

reference is made to covering "all university educational fees". Does that mean the assorted fees charged for student health center, local bus service, etc... are not covered?

Any insights would be much appreciated.

thanks

i found that the Navy contacted NROTC at the college directly. i hadn't spoken to the financial aid office, and they sent me a revised financial aid statement that included the scholarship. some other stuff they had offered me before i got the scholarship went away.

it seems that at the college i will be going to, they take the money directly from the Navy.

$750/yr for books

other fees: the college i am going to has quartermaster fees which include haircuts and laundry- these aren't covered by the NROTC scholarship as i found out.

there is a uniform allowance and a stipend too for the scholarship that you didn't mention. don't know how that works. the college i will be going to also has uniforms, but i was told that i still need to pay quartermasters fee which includes uniforms. so i really don't understand how the uniform allowance works.

When your son gets to his university, the unit will have him sign a sheet which will defer the responsibility to pay tuition to the Navy. The Navy will pay the tuition directly to the university, so ignore any bills you get from the university and you don't have to tell anyone about the scholarship.

Your student will receive $375 a semester for books and fees. This will come in the form of a check to the student or a direct deposit into the students account, but will come after the student has bought the books. Have you student ready to buy the books by himself before the check comes.

As a freshman, the Navy will pay your son $250 a month. He can use that for any other fees he might have. The stipend goes up $50 dollars every year also.

That is so interesting, because the AFROTC program gives 900 in stipend for books...I would have thought all of the ROTC programs gave the same amount....of course either way it still won't cover the book costs, but it does help!

Nope. Army also makes a lot more than us in stipends too.
