I am currently an E4 in the USAF. I am interested in joining NROTC at then end of my enlistment to join the Marine Corps. My question is do I HAVE to receive a scholarship being that my chapter 33 will cover all of my school costs?

From my understanding, you do not need to receive an ROTC scholarship to be part of the school’s program. Most students try for the scholarships because they are extremely beneficial financially for them since they do not have many other aid options. Your P911GIB will do just fine at any state school. Students figure “well I wanna do the ROTC thing, plus they offer free money, so why not get it, right?”

Also, the scholarships are tied into service obligation once the ROTC member has graduated. If you complete the program with no scholarship, then you are not required, from my understanding, to a service obligation. You also do not need, as I’m sure you’re aware, to participate in ROTC to become an officer - you also have OCS options as well.

No, you don’t have to receive a scholarship, but you have to achieve advanced standing by your junior year in order to commission. You can’t do all 4 years of ROTC without at least contracting.

Just do PLC during the summer after your junior year. It’s 10 weeks in Quantico, then you get commissioned upon graduation. I don’t think I would want to deal with ROTC being prior service. I’m glad you picked the right branch this time around!

Thanks for the replies everyone. What is wrong with a PS guy going thru ROTC in your opinion? How would I go about signing up for PLC? Oh yeah, it hit me half way thru my enlistment that I wanted to join the Corps! Still love the AF though.

If you complete the ROTC program and get a commission, you WILL have a service commitment, whether you had a scholarship or not.

Yes I am aware of that
