NROTC Scholarship

Today is April 30. As in the day before the national deadline May 1. I still have no word from the Navy as to whether or not I will be receiving a scholarship. I've been accepted at Georgia Tech, NC State, and Virginia Tech but I can't reasonably make a decision without knowing whether or not I will receive this scholarship. I can't figure out what to do so why not let random strangers help me decide? Seriously, I could use anyone's help.

I assume you have checked the online portal? What exactly does it say for status as of right now? Have you spoken with the Officer Recruiteryou worked with? What does he/she say?

Did you have a 3 of those schools on your NROTC app? In what order? Are you counting on the scholarship to pay for tuition or you can’t go?

First off, thank you for your response. I thought I was going to get lost in the land of Internet.

I have checked the online portal (every day for the last month) and it says “No decision has been made on your application.” I have called my recruiter and only gotten voicemails. However, there is a local recruiter that I may be able to call. I have also called all of the schools which I previously mentioned and I got voicemail there except for Virginia Tech where the guy said “no news is bad news” and “they will release a few the first few days of May.”

Now I am in the process of trying to email these people to try to get a hold of them. Next I plan to talk to the admissions departments at these schools and see if they will extend the May 1 deadline.

All three of these schools are on my NROTC app. Georgia Tech is 1, Virginia Tech is 2, and NC State is 3. I can’t afford to go to Georgia Tech unless I get this scholarship so I am really stressed out.

Thank you again for your help.

Okay, those are all good schools and good NROTC units. If you can’t afford GA Tech without the scholarship, then it’s probably less likely that your NROTC scholarship would be for GA Tech. Also, the cadre at VA Tech know their stuff. So I would write off GA Tech and concentrate on the other two. If you want the SMC experience and can afford VA Tech on your own, then go ahead. Otherwise pick the in-state option or the most affordable.

Are you considering an engineering major? If so, please don’t get hung up on the idea that GA Tech is ranked higher. The difference among those three is not significant, particularly for undergraduates.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I’m going to study Nuclear Engineering so since NC State actually has a reactor (and gave me a ton of financial aid) I’m planning on going there.

I’m glad that you said their engineering programs were comparable. I really want nothing more than to go to a good college and study nuke engineering.

Thank you both.

No decision being made on 4/30 is frankly a bad sign, especially for a Tier 1 major. There may be a few more slots that become available in the next week or so but not many. When was your application complete and submitted?

Is your #1 goal to be a Naval Officer? If so and you don’t get the scholarship join the unit as a College Programmer and compete for the 2 and 3 year scholarship. If you were just trying for the scholarship to pay the bills then not getting it may be a blessing. In my experience students who only want the scholarship for the money don’t make it through the program. The program is very efficient about weeding those people out. Then you would be only part way to a degree with no way to pay for school.

Which of these schools is your in-state option? If you do get a late scholarship that is the school you are likely to get due to cost. Why wasn’t NC State your #1?

I just checked a minute or two ago and I was not awarded a scholarship.

I do want to be a Naval Officer. I have spoken with a Lieutenant at NC State (where I’m about to commit) and discussed my other options and I plan to pursue the college program and then the 3 and then the 2 year scholarship.

Virginia Tech is my in-state option but due to miscommunication (my fault) I have not received financial aid from them so I am committing to NC State (where I got a great financial aid package). NC State was not my initially my #1 because Georgia Tech was more of a “reach” and I would not be able to go there without the scholarship.

Thank you for helping me to get through this stressful day. Please wish me luck in the future.

I’m sorry you were not chosen to receive the scholarship but it sounds like you have the right attitude to succeed. Make sure to sign-up for the NROTC classes you need to and stand out in a positive way in your unit in order to earn a scholarship. Max out your PRT, be everywhere 15 minutes early always, put your grades first, and volunteer for duty. And don’t screw up (drinking, drugs, arrest, etc)!

Make sure you sign up as a College Programmer immediately and understand all the requirements.

I wish you the very best of luck!!!

geekboy, Congrats on your decision to go to NCSU. My S did NROTC at NC State. S loved his four years there and received great advising on how to reach his Navy goals.
He’s a Spec.Ops officer now.
My husband is a NCSU alum. who majored in MechE. He has worked in the Nuclear power industry for his entire career. If you go Nuc. Navy, you’ll have lots of opportunities in the civilian world when your Navy career is over.
In the meantime, run…a lot!
Best of luck to you and Go Wolfpack!

DS had his interview today with the CO of the Navy recruiting command. At the conclusion of the interview, the CO called us and his NROTC Coordinator into the office and announced that he is being awarded the NROTC Scholarship under the ISR Program. He said that he would come to his school and present the “big check” when the time comes! CO said he will likely get his first choice school since we are so early in the process.

Needless to say, we are very proud! They are all aware that his first choice is USNA or USCGA, but we are very pleased to have plan B locked in!

Much celebration in our home today!
