I've applied to for the NROTC scholarship for VT Mechanical Engineering. I have already been accepted to VT's Engineering program, and I am awaiting word back from NROTC. My SAT was 610 reading, 650 math, 3.86 GPA unweighted (I believe that is the right term), I am an Eagle Scout, I have well over 200 hours of community service as well as multiple years of leadership positions in my troop (Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Instructor and Scribe), I am NHS President, have taken every AP class available, and have reached AP Calculus BC. My senior year I am taking AP Biology, AP English 12, AP Physics, AP Spanish 5, AP Calculus BC, AP Government, and I tutor an Algebra 1 class. My physical stats were 5'6'', 145lbs, Varsity Wrestling and lettered 3 years (applied before the 4th), ran cross country my Junior Year, run all the time and do calisthenics all the time. Do I have a shot at the NROTC scholarship?

Do you have a shot? Unless you have a medical problem, or some such thing, you are almost guaranteed a NROTC scholarship with those kinds of qualifications. In fact, you probably should have applied to the Naval Academy (too late now). One concern is that you have not heard yet – if you applied late, that does hurt your chances. If you did not fill out the forms correctly, or did not properly perform the physical fitness test, then you could have a big problem. If you did all those things, did them a long time ago (say, September), and did them right, then you should have heard by now.

By the way, what were the other 4 colleges which you put on your NROTC application? Did you apply to ALL of them? If not, do so ASAP. The Navy decides which university you go to with the NROTC scholarship. It might not be VT.

I finished my application in June, there was no physical test for NROTC that I’ve found, nor have I had to go to any medical screening yet. Is that something I have to have done?

Medical screening will come after they have decided that you meet every other qualification. (This is kind of new. I had my medical screening before being awarded the scholarship).

I might be mistaken about the physical fitness test. Marine Option NROTC applicants definitely are required to do this, as are Naval Academy candidates. Maybe NROTC does not require this until you actually show up for college.

You finished your application is June, but have not heard anything?! Nothing? Not even an interview? Something might have gotten lost. Seven months is a long time without hearing. So, double check immediately (yes, now!). The deadline is January 31. If a mistake has been made, you have three days to fix it!

Go to your file on the NROTC website. I hear they often notify you there a few weeks before you get the actual letter in the mail.

I have done the officer interview and I don’t have access to the application. I haven’t seen anywhere where there is a physical test until in college. I’ll double check the app today and try to get access

I just checked again and I don’t have access to modify the application or even review it myself. I did check the status page and it said all documentation has been received and the application has been processed.

It says my highest ACT/SAT Equivalent for verbal is 650, but I only remember entering a 610 for SAT. I did take the ACT so I suppose that’s how they calculated a 650 instead. If there was an error in that, they would have caught it and said something, right? Because they require verification of those statistics?

When did you receive your scholarship? Should I be worried that I haven’t heard anything since the officer interview? I have talked to the NROTC recruiter a couple weeks ago and he said I’m not missing anything.

Sounds like you did everything right. You would not have gotten an interview otherwise. Yes, SAT/ACT scores are verified with the testing agency.

The only thing you can do, other than wait, is to apply for admission for the other four universities besides VT (I assume this means Virginia Tech).

You were not even in grade school when I got my scholarship. Things are a little different now, but only a little. I have been helping my nephew this past year, as he applies for NROTC and the Naval Academy. He has not heard anything either. This is not unusual. When I got my NROTC scholarship, I heard in December but they made it clear that I was as early selection. I also got an Army ROTC scholarship but did not hear about that until April. The Academies rarely notifiy before April. Don’t worry, school does not start until September.

So, just make sure you are good to go to all 5 universities on your list. Otherwise all you can do is wait and check you status every few days. Several people on these boards have said that is how they found out. That is one change. No online status back when I got my scholarship.

You might not know that each university has a upper “quota” for NROTC scholarships. Once that quota is full, you probably cannot get the scholarship for that school. So, it is a good thing you applied early – that helps, because “first come first served” is what the NROTC recruiting officer told me. Still, Virginia Tech is a major ROTC school, with their Corps of Cadets. You might have lots of competition, especially if you happen to be out of state. The waiting could be caused by the Navy trying to get send you to one of your first three preferences.

I am sure that most people have not heard yet either. It is normal to not hear this early. I bet April is the biggest month for notification.

Okay good. I am in Virginia so it would be in state. I haven’t heard of anybody getting word back this early. But I’m committed to VT so if I don’t get the scholarship, I’ll apply for it again once I’m there for the 3 year

Being a Virginia resident will be a big help.

Also, I hope you applied for the VT “Emerging Leader Scholarship.” That can help with room and board cost, whether you get the NROTC scholarship or not.

Prediction: you will get awarded an NROTC scholarship.

Yes I am applying. That (hopefully) combined with the NROTC would cover just about everything. I was beginning to worry as I hadn’t heard back, nor have I seen any statistics of those accepted.

Thanks again for the help and clarification!

Does an interview have to happen before January 31st? I am under the impression that just the online application must be in by the deadline… Is this correct?

Strictly speaking, yes, the deadline for the application is January 31st. An interview would not happen before then if you had waited until the past month or so.
