NSCS? Can Anyone Tell Me A Bit About This Group?

Hello all. Like the title says, can y’all tell me a bit about this group?

For those not in the know, the NSCS is the “National Society of Collegiate Scholars”, an honor society. I got an email from them today inviting me to join the group, but me, being the ever so cautious person, decided to scope them out.

A quick Google search seems to confirm that they are indeed a legitimate group. Their website also seems “legit”, for lack of better wording. They seem to offer scholarships, networking opportunities, and other jazz that seems pretty cool to an undergrad like myself.

Going back to the email, however, I see that they have a lifetime membership fee of 95$. Now, I can pay this (I’ve still money from my FA refund), but before I take them any more seriously than I currently do, I wanted to hear from other people. Especially the CC community, as y’all are always in the know.

Can anyone share anything they’ve heard about the group? Better yet, is anyone currently a member of the group? I’m just looking for someone who has known anyone in the group or is in the group to share anything about what they’ve done under the group.

As a side note, I’m going to contact the supposed members in my school, but I still wanna hear from y’all.

(Also, I’m not sure if this is the right place for this post, but the group offers scholarships, so I figured “eh, why not?”)

Here’s an entertaining recent thread about it.

Ah, thank you for the link.

As a president of an NSCS chapter, don’t waste your money. Odds are, there is no benefit. They give away so much in scholarships, but you never hear of announcements and no matter how many people apply for them, you never get them. The success of NSCS being beneficial is dependent on the chapter and how well it is organized, how much effort the student wants to put in. After spending years dealing with NSCS national office and trying to make the best out of NSCS, I’ve realized it is nothing more than a shady business practice under the guise of an honor society. Guess what? With a 3.4 GPA freshman year, they get the most amount of students because all the courses have been easy and then you’re in no matter what. You not been nominated by the local chapter president, the chapter president has been coerced into harassing the school’s registar’s office to release to national office eligible member of the 1st and 2nd year students that are in good standing and have a 3.4 GPA or above. If we don’t make the school send the information out, we don’t get any funds to do any activities with the chapter. And National Office couldn’t care less if the chapter is struggling and has 3 members, they need the chapter active to get more students to get this ‘prestigious honor’ to pay their $95 fee, so they make more money. And that money is not equally shared, so students that try and give scholarships to their worthy members can’t because their chapter struggled to do well. Your student is not getting an honor, they’re paying a $95 fee for a line on a resume that means nothing, the equivalent of “I donated plasma once because I needed beer money.” Join a campus fraternity focused on service, or academics, don’t waste your money and feed this disgusting machine.
