Hi guys! Are any of you applying for NSLI Scholarship to study abroad for 2010? Did you hear any replies? I just got an email saying that I now need to go to an IN-PERSON interview (I've never been in an interview before!) in order to continue my application status. Has anyone of you applied for this scholarship? How was your experience studying abroad? How was the interview?!

Also, if you guys can please give me some interview tips that would be greatly appreciated! The only interview experience I had was during 8th grade when my school had a mock grade-wide interview...

I’ve applied for it too and also have this interview (for some reason that rhymes). @_@ It’s my first interview in ages. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to dress nicely, act respectful, prepare yourself (calm yourself before the interview and such), and do small gestures such as pushing in your chair afterwards. Good luck, fellow applicant! Hope at least one of us makes it, and please tell me if you do.

I applied for Chinese, Korean, and Arabic.
When’s your interview chewydog? mine’s on Feb 6th! AHh! and I have finals next week too so I’ll only have a few days to prepare! yikes xD I’m guessing my responses to interview questions have to match the essay…I totally forgot about what mine’s about xd

My interview is Sunday - I’m really nervous! I heard around 1900 people applied, of which 1300 became semifinalists. I think they have about 600 places to give out, so that’s less than a 50% acceptance rate. If you have an account on ExchangesConnect, there are a few threads there with information on past interview questions and such. It’s a pretty good resource.

I got called in for an interview in 2/1, going for Arabic, Chinese, and Turkish.

Hey, but a 50% rate of getting in is better than a lot of colleges

Interview Tip I got from my Spanish teacher: Dont wear a blue shirt, it really shows up when you sweat, and apparently you sweat alot in interviews

My daughter applied for Chinese, hindi and Russian and she has not heard yet. We are in California-not sure if it makes any difference. Since so many of you already been contacted for interviews, I thought it doesn;t look too promising. Good luck to all of you. Please keep me posted on how the intereviews go.

To forest2000:
I’m also in California, and I heard from them last week. NSLI ensure that they will send out semifinalist/rejection letters by the first week of February, if not, then you can call them.

And wow, 50% acceptance rate is really high for a full scholarship to live abroad? That must cost at least $3000 per student, which means $180000 to fund the program. GOOD LUCK GUYS!

I heard back last night and I had to call them! I applied to Russia turkey and china. I’m nervous. I have two exchange students right now and they’re giving me tips. I’ll find out Wednesday when my interview is. I think the later you replied the later you get and answer or reply. I applied really late like the night it was due. Good luck everyone!

lol. I was actually an interviewer for NSLI this year. I’m a senior in high school, so you can trust me. Don’t worry about the interview too much. Just be relaxed and completely honest about what you want from the program. The interview is to see if you have the qualities that an exchange student needs, but this is a very general explanation – it also means just making sure that you’re not closed to new ideas and experiences, etc. Which hopefully you wouldn’t be if you applied for this scholarship.

The interviewer told me that they will notify us on March 15th and by March 31st the latest! I’m anticipating that! GARRRR 1 month away… xD I hope the interview have so weigh…because I wrote a very mediocre application xD

Wow, March 15th!? I though we were going to be notified in April, this makes the wait much more bearable! I applied for the China summer program and I’m also in California. My interview is this Saturday! As for preparing, I really think it’s best to just be yourself. They don’t want to send someone oversees unless they are fully prepared for the adjustment. Good luck to everyone!
