NSLI-Y 2017 - 2018

Congrats to everyone who got the summer Chinese program! I’m applying for the academic year (fingers crossed) and reading about everyone talking about it is just making me want it more! haha

@Sparky232 hey! I’m from New York and I have my orientation at the same time so guess I’ll meet your son! There isn’t a facebook page but if enough people can confirm that their orientation is June 21-23, I might make one.

Hey guys,

I did not receive a finalist notification for the Mandarin summer program, but I contact NSLI-Y, and they responded to me with this message:

We are still in the process of sending finalist notification emails. We will be sending out notifications through March and we hope to finish the summer notifications by early-April. Semi-finalists are considered for the NSLI-Y program until they receive a notification that they have not been selected.

I don’t want to instill any false hope into myself or any other semi-finalists, but try to remain positive until you receive something (I know, its hard). There are probably several volunteer opportunities and internships still open in your area, so make sure you have a backup plan!

Good luck to the Korean summer applicants, year applicants, and those of us who are awaiting the dreaded rejection email!! Whatever the outcome, we’re all cool people

Also, AP students don’t forget to register for AP exams!

@zancarelipy I’m in the same boat. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the update. This means year long Chinese won’t happen until mid-April. Breathe, breathe …

Seoul notifications have begun!! Good luck everyone!

Oh did you receive a notification??

Hi guys I just got in for Jeonju Korea (summer)!

Is there a program held in Songdo this year? I haven’t heard anyone talk about that…

Congratulations!!!

@efisgin Congratulations!!!

I’ll be heading to Seoul for the summer with iEarn! Does anyone know if the program locations are relevant to prior language experience?

@bebe17 Congrats! I never really got a clear answer on that either. From what I’ve heard, I think they are to some extent sorted by prior experience or lack thereof, but I’m not entirely certain.

I just got my finalist notification and i’m going to Songdo. I’m so happy!!

@bebe17 Me too! I was also wondering about that. I have prior experience but I don’t know if that’s a factor.

Are notifications still coming out?

@taffycookie I think I would call myself a “moderate beginner”. I know more than nothing, but still very little. Can any of the other finalists for other locations state their language level? I’m curious! Also if there is any info in the facebook group that pertains to this or any kakao groupchat, please pm me! I don’t use facebook so I’m a bit out of the loop.

@katrinarose1221 Congrats!! I’m going to Songdo too, so I guess I’ll see you in New York. I think I’d consider myself a “moderate beginner” too, I know random Korean words and basic Hangul, but that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

@sofiavocado That’s exactly my level but I’m in Seoul. I would love to visit Songdo but I know NSLI-Y is not a tourist program so that might not be possible. (PS, and sorry to the parents on this thread, but if you guys don’t privately refer to your group as the “Songd-hoes” I’ll be disappointed, lol)

@bebe 17 Good luck in Seoul, I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun over there too and hopefully you get to visit Songdo in your free time! As for the “Songd-hoes” thing, I’ll have to let the rest of the group know about that when I meet them
