NSLI-Y 2018 - 2019

It’s about time for a new thread, right? Applications opened up approx. 2 days ago for 2018-2019. How are you coming along with your applications, what language do you want to study, & where?

For those who don’t know, they introduced a new trip to Indonesia for learning Bahasa Indonesia, if any of you are interested. But I believe it’s only available during the summer.

I finished my application today, but I’m waiting to submit until around October. I’m a senior applying for Korean Academic Year as my first choice and Korean summer as my second choice!

shakuton Nice! You really finished that fast? Wow! You haven’t got the teacher recommendation yet, though, right? I’ve filled out all the preliminary information & I got my Mother to do the parent statement (she hit it on the nose at EXACTLY 425 words, which was the limit, lol). I haven’t even scratched the surface with the essays yet, however. I’m a Junior applying for Arabic summer.

I didn’t do the teacher or teacher recommendations yet! My school year doesn’t start until September so I’m just waiting for that. I already had my essays done, as I applied last year and got rejected. They don’t change most of the prompts so I’ve been chipping away at them since last December lol. I really want to get in badly this year!

Oh, that makes sense. School started for me on August 8. I plan to ask my favorite Spanish teacher for a recommendation tomorrow & I also have to submit my transcript request to administration. Did you apply for the Korean academic year last year as well? Did you get to the interview stage? Also, since you’ve gone through this before, do you have any tips you could offer? Why do you think you got rejected? (Sorry for all the questions. It’s my first time applying & I’m rather nervous. :/)

I applied for Korean summer last year. I’m going to send you a message, okay? I think that might be a better place for questions as I talk-- write?-- a lot.

I started my application yesterday; I’m a junior, and I’m thinking I’ll probably apply with Russian summer as my first preference and then Chinese summer as my second (though I don’t know whether it would be more beneficial to do it vice versa?). Honestly, I don’t know where to place myself because I didn’t apply last year since I had learned of the program too late, but who knows!! I’m honestly still digging around looking for other programs similar to NSLI-Y that I could also apply to.

I’m also a Junior and I’m applying to Turkish summer/year. This is my first year applying and I really hope I have a decent shot, although I do have two more attempts after this if I don’t get in because of my late birthday. I started my app but I’m about halfway through, don’t know how anyone finished it in two days if that’s even possible lol.

Does anyone know which cities participants will stay in during China Summer?

@thorongil my son was NSLI-Y China this year and went to Xiamen

Does anyone know how NSLI-Y determines what city you’ll go to? Is it based on prior language knowledge or something else?

From what I’ve heard, they group more people with the same level of understanding of the language together.

My first choice is Russian summer and my second choice is Russian school year.

I just started my application! I’ll be applying for Chinese Academic year, still undecided on my #2 choice; I was thinking Arabic or Russian Academic year.

Any other seniors applying for a gap year? I’ll be attempting YES Abroad, CBYX, and ExCEL too.

@haylier Russian academic year is currently my second choice but I’m still not sure if I should take a gap year before college. I’m worried I’ll lose school scholarships.

I’m a senior applying for a gap year (Korean year). I’m also applying to YES but not CBYX because I don’t think I’ll have time for another app along with 9 college applications.

Definitely understandable. I’ve decided not to bother with many college apps this year, I’m pretty much dead set on taking a gap year, so let’s hope one of these programs come through… NSLI-Y is my top choice.

Does anyone know if they’re accepting fewer people this year because of possible budget cuts to the department of state?

For whatever reason I can never get the audio to listen to the webinars, anyone else have the same problem?
