Hey y’all. NSLI-Y applications opened today, so I thought I’d take the liberty of opening the annual forum. This will be my second time applying, as I was rejected as a semi-finalist last year. Best of luck!
My son was rejected twice, before getting accepted, so persevere! And best of luck.
This will be my first (and last) time applying since I am a senior. I really hope that I get into the Korean AY program. Which countries/programs are you guys applying to?
I don’t know whether to put Persian or Indonesian summer as my 1st choice, can’t decide they both seem so exciting
@cinnamon1212 anything you believe he did differently the last time he applied?
@Kennedy2010 he was that much more mature, I think! And this won’t help most people, but he visited Iran on a family trip, which may have convinced them he was truly interested in learning Farsi.
This is my first time applying (as a possible gap year) to Russian AY but honestly would be interested in any AY program because I dont have previous experience with any of these languages. Do you think that would hurt my chances if I put any language as my second choice on the app?
i have no language experience with any of the languages listed as well. most people who are accepted get their first choice anyway, and putting down your second choice won’t hurt ur app
Any advice for first timers applying?
I think I’m going to apply for Arabic academic summer and Arabic academic year. Not sure yet which is going to be my first choice. On one hand, I would much rather spend a year in Morocco, but I’m afraid it would hurt me academically. Any advice?
Hi im a sophomore applying for russian summer! this is my first time applying so im a bit scared, if anyone has any advice please give
I’m a sophomore applying for Korean summer! GL everyone!
Ugh actually I’m torn between Korean, Indonesian, and Hindi
What is the perspective of NSLI-Y for applying to your own nationality program (I.E. Russian who has Russian speaking parents at home but not fluent applying to AY Russia)?
@GrownFreshApples no, but I’ve seen blogs/videos of Korean and Chinese-Americans applying to the China + Korea Summer + AY programs. You’ll probably enjoy ur experience as well if ur selected
Hey all! I just got back from my NSLI-Y program! If anyone has any questions hmu
@unfortunatelydumb I’m also applying to the Arabic summer program. There are more spots for the summer programs, but fewer applicants and spots for AY. Would you say your academic concerns for the AY centered around standardized testing/college applications?
I’m edging towards the Russian program, but honestly they all look really good… It’s hard to narrow down the one I most want to attend.
I need a certain amount of credits for different things (Performing arts, PE credits etc) to graduate and if I miss a year Im afraid I wouldnt meet those requirements.
I’m a first time applier to the NSLI-Y program and I was wondering if there were any tips?
