Semi-Finalist Russian for this coming summer!
For those who received notifications for the interview, where are ya’ll from? I’m from SoCal and haven’t received it yet.
@duniiela dmv area had their interviews today!
I got an email last night about scheduling and I’m from the Midwest.
Can any prior participant in the China summer program tell me where the more advanced Chinese students were sent in your year? Thanks.
Beijing usually is most focused on language teaching.
For Chinese summer? There’s no Beijing, that’s only for the AY program
It all depends on your years of study. Kids with 4+ years of study usually get sent to the Xiamen program. I believe 3ish years is Nanjing, and I know 2 years of experience is Kaohsiung (the program I did this summer for NSLI-Y). There are more locations than these, these are just the ones I know for a certainty. Xiamen is 99% of the time the most advanced summer kids
For year though, Beijing is by far the most advanced location (which is reflected in how crazy intense the Beijing Year workload is)
If I don’t know any Chinese, where do you think I will be placed? Or do I have no chance? I applied for academic year.
Has anyone had their interview yet? how was it? Additionally I have my YES and NSLI-Y interview the same day, I am more serious about NSLI-Y, but I am scared that this will reflect bad on me overall.
@billnyegirl i had my interview a couple weeks ago, for both yes and nsliy, and it was pretty chill! the interviewer was super nice and really tries to make you feel comfortable. the main thing i learned is that both yes and nsliy use the same interview to evaluate you! i had maybe 1 nsliy and yes specific question each, but the rest were situational (how would you react to, describe a time that, etc.)
DS has yet to be contacted to schedule the interview. Anyone else not been contacted yet?
It’s alright if you haven’t been contacted by your interviewer- it doesn’t say anything about your “standing” with the program or anything, it’s just that your local volunteer hasn’t contacted you yet! I still haven’t been contacted, but I wasn’t contacted until the 2nd week in January for the past 2 years. Also, language experience has no effect on whether or not you get in, whether that be for year or for the summer programs. For China year, the least experienced students are usually split up between Changzhou and Kaohsiung (Taiwan)
I’m from PA and I just got scheduled for my interview.
My interview was over Skype and SO different this year! Anyone else have different experiences with Skype interviews?
I don’t know how well I answered the questions… But my interviewer was super friendly and we talked for an hour when most interviews lasted 15-20 minutes
Hope all semifinalists had good interviews! I had mine not this past Wednesday but the one prior, and it went much better than I expected. Now for the wait…
Just had my interview today. I thought it went pretty well and even better than it did last year. Good luck everyone! Are there any other Russian semi-finalists on here?
I had my interview on the 19th and one of the alumni volunteers said 6,000 people applied this year? Do you guys believe this is true? That’s double the number of applicants from previous years.
