NSLIY 2016-2017

I don’t know how i forgot to check out this forum when the application posted, but obviously most of the question you guys asked were answered. What grade is everyone in? I’m a senior!
@jninja88 getting credits while abroad is mostly dependent on your current school and their rules. For the most part students take extra classes before or after going abroad or during the summer to make up for the missed year.

Hey, everybody! My name’s Nathan, I’m a rising senior, and I’m planning on applying for a summer in Turkey. I just got done reading last year’s thread and it’s 3am here, so I might fall asleep writing this. I was pleasantly surprised, however, at the amount of people that got accepted. I only found out about NSLI-Y yesterday while researching other study abroad scholarships on a whim (all on my own time, unfortunately, due to my poor’s schools incompetence at googling opportunities for students!) I wish that I had known about this program last year, or else I would have applied for a full year. I’m still glad that I’ve come across it in time, though.

School for me starts September 4th, so I think I might write my essays for the application now and have my super-meticulous English teacher check them when I get back. Good idea, or should I wait? I feel so anxious to begin the application after vicariously living through the stress of everybody in the 2015 thread! I’ve already started prepping my responses for the semi-finalist interviews…

For all those alumnus out there, I’ve got some questions: what do you think was the most important personality trait/characteristic that NSLI-Y looked for in your interview and application? I’ve heard a lot about maturity and being able to handle unexpected situations, but what do you think got them particularly interested in you? What was your winning answer?

Good luck everybody, and don’t forget the deadline!

@itstricky yeah sorry I haven’t been on here for a minute! yeah my intuitions were right! I didnt get it! 8-> i’m going to apply again this year but I was an alternate for the Korean year program.

Hi everyone! I was an alternate for Russian summer last year, but I am looking forward to applying again this year!

@fromUSA2Russia I remember seeing you in forums last year! How was the summer program? Where did you end up going?

I am a sophomore in high school and I’m applying for Russian summer as my first choice. I am not sure about my alternate yet but I really like the Cyrillic alphabet and want to stick with that. I’m on the part of the application where it’s asking for all the hobbies, activities, work experience, volunteer experience, etc. I put a stuff in there, as I’m really involved at my school and have a wide variety of hobbies.

However, I’m stuck at the bottom of that page where it’s asking for any achievements. I don’t really have any major achievements. I got Presidential Service Award in 8th grade and that’s all that I can really think of. I was an international and national qualifier for a CTSO organization last year, don’t know if that’s worth putting. And when I was younger, I won first place at a few statewide tae-kwon-do tournaments. What are you guys putting?

@geekygeek I’m a sophomore too :)>- I named some school and athletic awards. I think anything you’ve accomplished recently can be listed

hey everybody! i’m an ib sophomore applying for china and korean summer >:D<
I would like to know if i’m rejected from my first choice, will i be sent to my second choice’s pool? as in, if im rejected from china, will i be considered at all for korea , and if so, at a lower chance than those who had it as their first choice?

also, do past members know if they give exact days of the program when you get semi-final information? the days for most of then are from june to some part of august, but my school starts mid-august and I’m afraid of missing class. will they be giving out definite days prior? i need them to be able to determine whether I’m going to attend for sure or not.

thanks a lot! i can’t wait til we all get news soon!~~ good luck to all

oops. i think i should add to my first question…
i’m wondering if with your 1st and 2nd choice, is it an all-or-nothing sort of deal? like you’re either going to get into your 1st choice or not, and 2nd is highly unlikely?

i’m decided between chinese and korean and i don’t know which one to lean towards. i myself am chinese and mandarin helps both in the future and for personal reasons, but i would also like korean because i want to expose myself to a different culture and know how i should face my problems when it comes to learning a language from scratch (i know very very little mandarin but most of my knowledge comes from cantonese) thanks & good luck!~

Hello everybody!! I’m currently a Junior in high school and I’m applying for the Russian summer program as my 1st choice and Turkish summer as my 2nd choice  I have relatively good stats–quite a bit of AP/Honors classes but my freshman year was a little rough. I studied Mandarin in school (4 yrs) & am fluent in Korean (my family speaks Korean). Does lots of language exposure help though? haha… Ugh but the whole application process makes me so jittery nervous ahaha :stuck_out_tongue: GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

@fromUSA2Russia Hi! I’m applying for Russian and I have a couple questions. How often did you guys take trips outside your base area? And was anyone on your program religious?

Hello everyone! I’m applying for the korean summer. I’ve already been to Korea this last summer with YFU and I was wondering if my chances go up if I’ve already been on an exchange program? I really hope to make it back to Korea.

Hi everybody! I’m 14 yo and a current sophomore in H.S. I’m applying for the China and Korea summer. I love all Chinese/Japanese languages. I have attended Chinese school on the weekends for a year and I do a lot of self study. I know a little bit of Korean but I’m better with Chinese. Have a ton of awards/volunteer service so I’m not worried about that. I take AP/honors courses with straight As. I’m more worried about the essays! Good luck to you all

hey everyone.
I’m a summer Oman alum, had a fantastic experience and am more than happy to answer any questions.
I’m also applying for Arabic year to do as a gap year.

First time in this thread, but hi everyone! I’m a junior applying for Korea and China summer, which it seems quite a few people are doing. I’m worried the most about the essays since I’m not the best at writing. Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck in you applications!

Hey I’m applying for Russian summer! Has anyone done the program before (specifically the russian one)? How did the visa/passport process work?

Hey everyone I’m applying for Korean summer and I am currently a sophomore. As a freshman I applied as well but only made it as semi finalist. This year I am hoping to go all the way ^^ If any of you guys just want to chat, feel free to private message me!~

Hey! I just want to encourage everyone that, if you really want to go abroad, apply to YES Abroad, CBYX, and ExCel alongside NSLI-Y. Even if NSLI-Y is your first choice, it is always good to have backups, and admissions decisions don’t necessarily “overlap”. I am currently in Thailand with YES abroad, so feel free to message me with any questions about YES. Good luck in all of your applications!!

What is ExCel?

I’m pretty sure it is a study abroad program for Lithuania
@arabicbyu

Hey guys! I’m applying for Russian summer, and I wanted to know if anyone knew what difference there’s supposed to be in the explanation of program choice (section 13) and the essay? Thanks!!
