Any feedback on the parents program for NSO? This is our 1st child in college so I thought it might be interesting. Also, how do you register?

You can register for the parents program after your kid signs up for NSO.

We didn’t do it. Between the info session, tour, and Accepted Student Day, we felt like we had enough information, so it didn’t seem worth the price ($100/adult + hotel for 2 or 3 nights).

Thank you, notrichenough- I have also been trying to decide what more info they could possibly give me to make it worth taking 2 days off of work, paying for a hotel room, gas, and the $100 fee. Think I’ll pass…and have $100 more to put toward that tuition bill (this is my first, also, in college).

It just seemed to me that a lot of stuff they were going to do is either stuff I had done already, or is really only of interest to my kid (and hopefully they talked about it in his orientation), like “Academic Support” or “Technology @ UMass”. I probably would find it interesting - but not enough to pay for.

I also don’t think I am a particularly “helicopter-y” parent and my kid is pretty self-sufficient (I let him drive himself to NSO and back), so I didn’t think I needed sessions on “Letting Go” or “Creating a Home Away From Home” or whatever.

Other parents may feel differently.

I initially didn’t think I would go but I’m planning on going because someone who the DW works with recommended it.

Our plan at this point is to haul our pop-up camper and stay at a nearby campground…make a family outing out of it (for everyone but the S who gets to stay in the dorms).

Thanks for the feedback! Luckily we live only 40 min away so no hotel is needed - I can just drive up. My husband went w/ my son to the open house for admitted students and were very impressed. I wish I had been able to go as well since we never did a tour. Guess I’ll just have to look over the itinerary again …
