I was wondering what types of things that go on during NSO are the most important for getting to know people. Is it the school-sanctioned activities, or parties and stuff? I don’t really plan to be a huge partier, so I’m worried that I’ll be stuck not meeting anyone.

You'll get to know the people in your group pretty well. For me it was my hall, don't know how non-Hill people were divided...

NSO is a bunch of assembies and little trips to places. I don't think there were any real school-sanctioned parties.

I think NSO is when all the clubs and organizations hang out on Locust Walk - if you don't get to know anyone in your group, you can go to all the club meetings and find people who share your interests.

Skip the trips, hang out with friends, and hit up millions of parties. Honestly, the parties during NSO are the best...there is no other time, even fling, when there is so much party energy on campus.

Art Museum Parties are definitely school sponsored and very fine.

most of the actual school sponsored events during nso, quite frankly, blow. sitting through academic integrity assemblies and stuff is not fun at all. however, (i actually dont remember if this was nso) performances by student groups were fun, as is the general "just got to college" experience. And since all the freshmen are new, everyone is uber-friendly and youll find yourself asking "hi, whats your name, what school are you in, where do you live" like a thousand times.

oh, and the art museum trip is mad fun. i loved it last year.

and as said earlier, hit up the parties! if youre totally against party debauchery then i guess you won't like it, but if you enjoy parties in any sense, nso is the time to enjoy yourself. looking back, nso is def the time with the most parties. no question!

Yeah, definitely go to the performing arts night. Skip any school related speeches.

There's several good activities:

Toga Party at the Museum
Art Museum shindig - don't miss this for the world.
Comedy Night - comedians are usually good
Open Mic Night at Kelly Writers House - for the artistically inclined

Every frat at Penn has a party. Word for the guys: Don't show up with just a group of guys, or you will be rejected from the party. Girls are needed.

It's around day 4 that social cliques begin to form, but before that, making friends/getting to know people is so easy.

do you sign up for nso or how does it work?

NSO = new student orientation. All incoming freshman take part.

NSO is a series of events that are designed to introduce new students to the academic, cultural, and social aspect of Penn's campus and the Philadelphia community.

There are some mandatory events, but for the most part, the evening events are designed as social events.

The 2006 website should be up by the end the week, so periodically check out www.upenn.edu/nso for updates.

Btw, www.pennster.com (Penn's virtual orientation network) will go live on Monday, June 12.

If you have any questions, give the NSO Staff a call 215.898.7000.
