Has anyone here experienced it? I posted a thread like this earlier...but this was before I got in. I have a few questions to ask about it and the average day. If you are interrested in helping me out, please email me at Fabulous2422@yahoo.com or just respond to this thread. Thanks!

:)

i took the summer college preparation program and it was an amazing experience...i could go on forever about why i loved it so much, but if you have specific questions that would be easier to answer and probably would be more focused.

one plus of the program was that it made me fall in love with the school, which is why i did early decision there and am "DECIDED"

Thanks! What classes did you take? What did you find that you did everyday? What did you think of the writing tutorial? Did you get to go sailing...if so, how much did it cost and did you have to go out on the boat with anyone? Did you take any "mini-courses"? Did you know anyone who too calc 1 and 2? If so, what did they think of it? Any other helpful info is appreciated!

I actually took the intensive chemistry course--aah! It was very challenging and I think we were the ones who really had to work hard during the 8 weeks! Everyday was just going to class and coming back doing the work and if there was time, having fun with all the other college prep kids. The other college prep kids had classes that weren't everyday so for example, they had class only tuesdays and thursdays and got to have fun on all the rest of the days. But poor us chemistry students had lecture every day from 9-12 and labs tuesday and thursday from 1-5!

The writing tutorial to me wasn't helpful and was kind of just an hour and a half of reading your essays to your peers and discussing ways to write college essays. However, i met more cool people there so that was always a plus.

I am not sure about the whole sailing thing, but I know that there were so many fun activities available to do--concerts, shows, downtown trips, boat rides, etc. There were actually two mandatory events that the residents had to attend for team-building, etc. It was fun stuff!

I did not take any mini-courses, as chemistry was so much to handle in itself. Also, I don't remember anyone who took calc 1 and 2, but no matter what class you take, I think everyone had a blast!

The college prep really does prepare you for college. It gives you a taste of dorming, independence, and meeting new people. It was tons of fun. I would definitely recommend it because you'll also get to spend 6-8 weeks in an awesome city with awesome people.

Any more questions...don't hesitate to ask!

Thank you for all of those answers. Yea, the Calculus course will also be one of those classes that meets everyday for 3 hours.
There must have been some free time that you had though....right?
Would people hang around the campus all day? Go into town? Get jobs? What about the program did you like so much?
What were the people like?
How big were the classes?
Were the first few days awkward?
Did you like your room mate?
Sorry about all the questions! I really appreciate your time in answering them:)

No problem :)

Yeah I mean it's only 3 hours a day and you have all afternoon and night to have to yourself so don't worry about the class...it will pay off! trust me...The only thing with my class was that tuesdays and thursdays were labs so i only had nights free, which were spent studying..aah!

Yeah the Evanston campus is beautiful and it's the summer so you always had time to go around campus and go around to the restaurants around in Evanston and just have an awesome time. I am not sure if many people got jobs because they were just looking for time to chill and hang.

I loved the program because I think it gave me the reality of being a college student. I had to be so independent and knew no one around me so yes, you are forced to become friends with the people...just joking...It was also a good experience because you had to take the classes with other college students...some of the people in my class were in their thirties! It taught me the competition of going to a school like northwestern, where everyone wants to get that 100% not just a 90.

The people were truly awesome and have become some of my great friends. It was a great bonding experience.

Well, i took the general chemistry course, which is a class that is sometimes a requirement so I think there were like 50 people enrolled in it.

The first few days were a little weird, but I had like 7 other college prep kids in the class with me so we all kind of formed a group and hung out with each other so it wasn't too bad. My roommate, let's just say all the college prep people were awesome!

Don't hesitate to ask more questions...I was just like you last year because I had no idea what I was getting into :)

Thank you, yet again! Of course...I have more questions:).

Was the food good?
How were the dorms?
All of the writing tutorials are from 3-4:30...which conflicts with my 1-4 classtime...did you meet anyone with this problem? I emailed NU about it and am still waiting for a reply.
How much money should I bring?
Was there cable (not that that is important...lol)?
Did you have to work REALLY hard?
How are the courses graded? On a curve? Percents?
Were there more college students or HS ones?
Did you see the Cherub kids at all?
How many HS students were in the program?

This is all for now...I am sure I will have more later. Again, this is so great of you to help me out. I will not be completely ignorant and as shy as I may have:D

also...what kind of clothes do most people wear?

haha no problem whatsoever

The food was mostly good. There was a wide variety of stuff available, but the timings of the cafeteria were sometimes annoying.
The dorms are the same as all dorms...small and no air condition buddy so bring a fan :)
The writing tutorial didn't conflict with mine and I'm not sure about other people--but I think they offered one at night at our time, but I'm sure they'll figure something out for you.
You should bring a few hundred dollars cause your books will cost you a hundred or even a couple hundred. Then, of course there is so much to see in Chicago and sometimes you just feel like eating out, shopping, etc. so bring some money.
I didn't really watch tv so i am not sure...they had a main tv in the lounge area so you sometimes get a glimpse of fun stuff :)
I worked hard just because I felt like I should....it was chemistry too so you have to work hard to do well (but thats with every class)...so work hard, but also have fun!
My professor really didnt curve because she said she didn't need to, but I am sure other professors do or will. My class was based on percents...but like at the end she curved some cause this girl had an 85 and she got a B+ from the professor.
There were definitely more college students than high school students and you get to see a lot of different people. There were about 80 high school students total.

Hope that helps and once again don't hesitate to ask more questions :)

80 Students! I was thinking that there were at least a couple hundred! Were there more girls or boys?
Did you feel that you got to meet everyone?
Did you make friends with any of the college people? (or were they in like completey different dorms)
Were people pretty dressed down or nicely?
Do the colege students take the writing tutorial also?
I will be an 8 week student also...do you find that there is hardly anyone left after the first 6 weeks?
I am just trying to get an idea about the atmosphere. I think that these should be the last of my questions...also...if there is anything besides a fan and money that you recommend that I bring, I will appreciate it! Thank you Thank you, Thank You, Thank You!

I thought 80 was a lot! I didn't think too many people were fond of the program.

I am not sure about the girl to boy ratio, but it was pretty equally distributed.
I feel I got to meet a lot of people because you're all living in the same dorm hall. Yeah you make friends with the college people through class, but you don't really see them because they don't live near you. Everyone dressed normally, not dressed up...normally jeans, t-shirts, tanks, shorts, the regular. If your a girl, I would bring some dress clothes just in case there are any formal events or if there are days when you want to go out and dress nice.

The writing tutorial is only for the high schoolers.

I think there were about 14 people left for the 8 week portion, so a lot of people do leave.

I have some questions for you lol...where are you from and is northwestern one of your choices for college?

Again, thank you so much for all of your help! I looked back at all of of my posts and realized that I must have asked about 40 questions! lol.

I used to live right by NU in Highland Park, IL. I moved to Green Bay, WI. a couple of years ago and have missed the north shore alot. Luckily...I still go back about once a month! Northwestern, along with Princeton, Stanford, and Dartmouth, is one of my top choices for college. I will say though, you sure have me convinced that NU is one of the best schools out there! I can't wait for this summer!

What are you planning to major in? Also, where are you from?

I am actually from the Chicago area also so Northwestern is like my home away from home--I go to Evanston like every week haha...I think I am going to either major in Chemistry or Biochemistry, but ultimately I want to go to Med School.

Yeah I am in love with NU so I try to influence a lot of people :)

I think the summer program will give you a good idea of where Northwestern stands in your list of colleges and I am sure you'll enjoy it.

Any questions, you know the drill

Thanks inquiringinfo! It was good talking to you!

Do girls at the program, or at the school, just carry their books, use shoulder bags, use totes, or use backpacks? What is most common? Thanks!

hmm i don't really remember...i carried a backpack because i am attached to mine :-) ...the girls in my class who were part of the program carried their books around, but I preferred to have my backpack--i don't there was one trend over another
